People are always comparing Chris Brown to Michael Jackson. But I have said since the beginning that vocally, musically, and during performance he is actually like his Uncle Bobby, LOL. He's even trying to rap like B. Brown now. Bobby was still better overall though.

Anyway, thanks for posting this. I haven't watched my Mother's tape of the '89 AMAs in a long time (YouTube is wonderful, LOL). And "Don't Be Cruel" was one of my favorite albums growing up. music

I didn't watch it in '89 or '90 first, but sometime in 1994/95, LOL. But darn, I should have remembered since I've got this on tape, LOL.

I remember watching this too back then. I was saying that Bobby was on his way to Micheal Jackson superstardom if he played his cards right.

Bobby was indeed a great talent. It's really sad that drugs and stuff got into his way. He was on his way to being a superstar.

I think his popularity quite naturally crested, probably with this performance.

"Humpin' Around" came out next and he just seemed old by then.

Also, watching this I am reminded how official American Music Awards used to be... now it's like half of their nominees don't show up and they can't get the hottest acts to perform.

I've never listened to his music although I've always known of him as Whitney's (now former) husband..... but hearing "My Perogative" now I'm thinking that Prince must have been listening to Bobby Brown when he made "New Power Generation", the song on Graffiti Bridge.

Chris Brown and Usher took their cues from Bobby.
