Name an artist from the past that you feel was/is overrated Yes from the past folks...anything from the 80's and farther back. Nothing from the 90's and 00's so that means, you can't use Beyonce for your answer..we have enough threads about her running daily here.
The Beetles (yes they were pretty good, but I always loved "The Who" over them) Run DMC (they were an act that many looked up...but I just could never get into them) Diana Ross I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

The Beetles (yes they were pretty good, but I always loved "The Who" over them) Run DMC (they were an act that many looked up...but I just could never get into them) Diana Ross If u don't mind me asking, how old r u? I ask this because u listed Diana and Run DMC as overrated. U have 2 have been around 2 understand their significance. Diana (as a solo artist) was marketed as the black Barbara Streisand in the beginning. She then became this huge "gay" icon. She took what Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge and Eartha Kitt had in the 40s and 50s and became a huge mega star. Sure, she wasn't the best singer, nor was her material the best, but she deserves credit for a lot of the things going on now. She was a disco/dance icon, pretty-good actress, and beautiful as hell. As for Run DMC, they broke racial and chart barriers in the rap world. That is their main contribution. They also started a fashion trend that continues to this day (dressing in warmup suits and athletic gear to perform in). If I had to pick any artist that was overrated, it would be The Beatles. I'm not going to diss their talent or work, but I think that a lot of people love them because they were the first mega-group marketed to America and the World. Sure, others did it before them, but they were HUGE. Then people fell in love with Lennon and Mccartney's work. They wrote excellent songs, but their recordings (to me) were not always stellar. Besides, Ringo thinks he is the be-all...end-all of the group. Other overrated artists to me are Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Presley (he stole everything and marketed it to white audiences), **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Probably the only one i would agree on is Elvis. What the Beatles did from 1965-1970 is still better than any artist has ever done in a small span of time, also with the limited things they had. Nowadays everyone has the benefit of everything and does shit with it.
I would have to add to this list, Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead, i just never could get into anything from the dead and barely anything from Floyd. Though this isnt really the past i would have to add Radiohead, though they are a good band, they are way overrated. And the band Arcade Fire, holy shit, can we chill on the praise on that band already, its like another Amy Whinehouse, get real. We were watching this documentary and it featured The Grateful Dead, I was sitting there thinking "Really? They were considered cool?" And I somewhat agree about Radiohead. Maybe I need to give the music another chance, but I doubt it will help "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. It's interesting that these 2 bands are very popular among people that love to get stoned. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Madonna, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears!
There I said it. ![]() ![]() However, in their defense, they are more talented than a lot of people, so I guess it is all relative. And they are entertainers so.....

There's nothing overrated about Run DMC, the Beatles, Aretha, JB, or the vast majority of people mentioned in this thread. ![]() "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis
