Does anybody know when was the last time a country song went to #1?

...And Underwood's American Idol song doesn't count...

good question . I searched and came up with this although it doesnt exactly answer your question , the latest one is Faith Hill's Breathe in 1999. Taylor Swift is coming close.

A real "Country" song could never go number one on the Hot 100, simply because of the way things are monitored. Taylor Swift, Shania,Faith, Carrie etc...are not "country" they are pop artists. The fact that they now call Jewel,Bon Jovi and the Eagles "country" shows that there is a clear line now between "mature" pop songwriting, and just catchy pop songwriting that gets you the teen crowd.

You are so right. Mainstream country is now very pop. Hell, even Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Brooks and Dunn, etc. are all pop sounding artists. The only difference is they have a "twang" in their voice.
