Nobodies mentioning the Raphael Saadiq album? This album is on several critic's top ten lists and on Rolling Stone's top 50. Saadiq relaunches old school, but in a much more satisfying way than any new Prince crap.
You know I had to go there. lol Except for Tv On The Radio, Saadiq has one of the top albums of the year. All you others say Hell Yea!!

Hated it, wish to get rid of it. I think he is talented, but to hear him xerox the Motown sound in 2008 as if we are in 1964 - no, no, no. Bring back Tony, Toni, Tone. Music Royalty in Motion

I liked it on the first few listens, but haven't gone back to it in a while. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Can't believe some people are hating. Not everything has to be brand new and original. Sometimes a nod to the classic era is just fine with me.
Great f'n album. I wish "P" would put out an album this tight and polished. Do your thing Saadiq.

The music of the fifties and the sixties were classic and didn't need to be done again in my opinion. I have the album, tried to love it because of Psykosoul but I just can't get into it. I am glad the critics dig it and hope it gets Saadiq some Grammys.Great f'n album. I wish "P" would put out an album this tight and polished. Do your thing Saadiq.

I love the album. It's one of the few "new" CDs that I bought in 2008.I totally understand why Raphael is making this kind of music. It's REAL SOUL MUSIC....it's genuine. There's nothing wrong with going retro, especially when today's styles are so bland and boring.

"So sweet and tender.."
This album got alot of talk in September on Prince.org. I just got the album about a month ago and i LOOOVE IT My favortie song has to be Oh Girl and Stay In Love... VENDETTA: The music of the fifties and the sixties were classic and didn't need to be done again in my opinion.
I agree that it did make me want to listen to some Temptin' Temptations and the Delfonics... Do you like the new UK artists who are in this style like Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, Duffy, Adeleor Joss Stone? Robin Thicke is doing it too...even Labelle went back to he 70's for their last album...I say if it has good songwriting and its catchy I dont care what era it came from. I like it. It's fine. But it's such perfect replica of what's come before that it's completely pointless. I'd rather just listen to the original stuff.

Nope, I definitely cannot stand Amy Winehouse but I do like Mark Ronson. thumbs down on Adele, Duffy and the rest. Are you talking about Robin going back on the song Magic? I do not like that song at all. This album got alot of talk in September on Prince.org. I just got the album about a month ago and i LOOOVE IT My favortie song has to be Oh Girl and Stay In Love... And lyrically, it was modern, with a retro take on the arrangements. I think another problem is... with Amy or Sharon Jones and a couple of others, it was fresh. Eventually the law of diminishing returns sets in and a couple of years later, you're sort of over the neo-retro thing. Duffy and Raphael Saadiq put out great albums last year, worth hearing, worth saving, but at some point it's like "okay, this is just a variation on the same idea I was really grooving on 2 years ago." It's still blows 90% of what's out there out of the water, but it's doing it by watering down or just retreading the fad (that itself was a water-down or retreading the past).

His album sounds gimicky and contrived to me. I like the track he did with Q-tip on his album though. Best albums to come out this year are Q-tip's "Renaissance" and Grace Jone's Hurricane. [Edited 1/12/09 8:28am]

I totally agree with your last sentence but was it necessary for sadiiq to reach waaay back and go smokey robinson & the miracles on us. Hell he's even dressing like it now. I dig the lead single but it's nothing that i crave to put on repeat. The majority of songs i listened to on it just didn't move me. I'll have to give it another listen. I like instant vintage and even some of Ray Ray. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

I don't get this forum sometimes. Something that's often heard here is, "They don't make music like they used to!" So somebody's goes and "makes music like they used to," and now there's complaints about it sounding too much like music they used to make.
