Madonna, covering the tracks of her theft, lies about Cyndi Lauper

Here's an interesting Cyndi interview from 2005. They mention Madonna copying her style, and show Madonna being asked about Cyndi's fashion, to which Madonna (disingenuous as ever) replies, "I think we ripped off of each other a bit in the early days". Yeah, right! Only one of you was doing the ripping, love. But anyway, it's a fascinating interview with Cyndi here that told me things I didn't know before about her traumatic teen years.

It's fine to be a fan of somebody but the anti Madonna and Janet threads are just strange...like Cyndi gains anything from that!

Please provide an example of Madonna ripping off Cyndi?

I loved Cyndi,
but I only remember her during a short period,
with that one album and that's all I recall her doing.
Has she done anything else since "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"?

Ignorance excused, get on wikpedia and have a look.

It's a mixture of character and old fashioned skill that I like in her. She can hold her own with a Patti Labelle, or singing a Marvin Gaye song, but also she's got a humour and a quirkiness that is all her own. I like INDIVIDUALS. There are very few of them in pop. Her voice has something most singers do not have... PERSONALITY, CHARACTER. You can hear childhood innocence in it. She's genuine. I like all of that. I loathe fakery. Also, there are so many pop stars who are in music for all the wrong reasons. Your girl Janet is an example of that. Cyndi is the opposite of all that, but at the same time she's fun. I like fun as much as anyone else, but I like it to be fun with some heart. I see and hear no heart in most pop artists.

Well, the fact is the Cyndi threads don't generally get much attention round here, but when you put Madonna's name in the title suddenly people are interested. I usually just do it as a ruse to get more of a response. It works every time. lol

So was that a photo of Cyndi wearing the pink corset with the blonde hair and before Madonna? Wow...she was ripped off!

From what I'm hearing, she seems to be ok with it. I'll tell you what. Madonna cannot steal her high octave range.

I'm not being sarcastic. They showed Cyndi talking about it and than showed that photo....it was seriously hard to see if it was Madonna's face.

Actually she had a few good albums after "She's So Unusual".
Here's a link to the Discography page of her website, where her albums are listed AND you can listen to her last album, "Bring Ya To The Brink" released in 2008 which is nominated for a Grammy.

This is probably a better answer to your question. In this nine minutes you see a good distillation of her appeal. Soul, baby. The performance is in Paris, hence her comment at the end about "French American".

What Cyndi invented the corset!?!?

I looove Cyndi, and but i dont get how people constantly pit these two against each other. Sure they came out at a similar time - but madonnas style was more street, Cyndi's more eclectic and quirky. Their sound was different - madonna's was slightly more club, and subsequantlty pop, and Cyndi's was more new wave / rock oriented. Madonna chose to take a very different path with her career - i dont think Cyndi ever wanted that really.

Both are still making music 25 years later so they can both be considered successful.

Interesting interview though.

Cyndi's fans are still bitter that Madonna became the major superstar that they think Cyndi should have been. They can't seem to get over it and let it go.

How many Cyndi fans do you know? Errr, none. lol I'm the only one you're basing that judgement on and my distaste for Madonna has nothing to do with Cyndi. As I told that other guy, I bring Madonna in it to get more of a response to the thread. People round here aren't really interested in her (mikematronik's last Cyndi thread only got about 30 views and no responses) so I cater to the org's low standards and mention the Vampire as a ruse to lure the uninitiated in. No matter how many times I pull the same trick it always works. wink

The reason madonna's star grew was that her style was more accessible to the youth markets and MTV, and she released progressively better records in quicker succession than Cyndi (Madonna (83); Like A Virgin (84); True Blue (86) Whos That Girl (87) Like A Prayer (89); I'm Breathless (90)).

I always feel that True Colours was a poor follow up to So Unusual, particularly given the 3 year gap, ditto A Night To Remember.

Midnightmover have you heard Blue Angel? Im itnerested as I never have, but have always love Im Gonna Be Stron - so i was wondering whether it was worth seeking out.

Also am i the only one who loves 'Goonies R Good Enough'???

Errr, no. The point about Madonna lying by suggesting that they copied each other is absolutely true. But do I really care about that? Not really. I just wanted people to see the interview since I think it's interesting.

Anyway, Cyndi's a gifted artist, and I love the range in her voice. I don't care what could've been with her career, only that she continues to do things her way. Lovely woman.

What is this "successful thread" crap? I didn't know there was any such thing as a "successful" or an "unsuccessful" thread. Does that mean all threads that don't make at least two pages are "failures"? Grow the fuck up, please.

And by the way, this thread isn't actually about Madonna. If you look at my posts I've actually ignored that line of discussion all together and focused on Cyndi. Like I said, the Madonna thing was just a way of getting the uneducated in. Not to have a "successful thread" (whatever the hell that is), but just to shed a little light on someone worthwhile for a change.

I remember when Cyndi's first album came out & MTV was promoting the shit out of that. The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun video was on heavy rotation and Cyndi was constantly at MTV studios, she basically was their "It" girl. By the time Madonna showed up on the MTV awards in a wedding dress doing Like A Virgin, that was all she wrote for Cyndi. The baton was passed so to speak..

Nah, Cyndi continued having big hits after "Like A Virgin". She just took too long releasing albums and let her boyfriend/manager run things too much, not to mention the suits who fucked her up so badly with A Night To Remember. But who gives a shit? She's the best female pop performer of the last thirty years, recorded some great songs and is a lovely, interesting person on top. There is a lot more to life than being on the charts.

That aint a lie - its a polite way of telling the stupid bint of a reporter to shut up. You cant suppose anything about these two - how the hell do you know Cyndi didnt copy anything from Madonna. She was obviously impressed enough with Like A Virgin to get the Kelly / Steinberg songwriting team to write True Colours for her. they both emerged from New York scenes at the same time - everyone was copying from everybody - thats what happens in any particular "scene".

The "stupid bint" of a reporter only said "and the fashion?". She didn't ask anything about Madonna copying Cyndi, so the fact that Madonna took it that way says more about her guilty conscience than anything else. And implicit in Madge saying "I think we ripped off of each other a bit in the early 80s" is an admission that she did indeed copy Cyndi. She's just trying to make it look better by suggesting that maybe Cyndi copied her too. This is a flat out lie and Madonna knows it. Cyndi was an original who took the whole mismatching, DIY punk ethic to another level. Part of that was the whole underwear-as-outerwear thing, but whereas Cyndi was doing all of that in a self mocking way, Madonna turned it into more of a sex toy thing. Cyndi actually talks about this a bit more here....
