Yep the bassline + the keyboards on Thriller's intro are inspired by the intro of 1999.

I'm gonna skip all the comments and say that I was going to start a "Happy 30th Birthday" thread for this album last month. I had it all types out and everything. lol But the forum was overloaded with MJ threads and folx were complaining about it.

So, yes, I've always said here that this is their best album. I've always thought so. And I'll always say that out of MJ's entire catalog this lp is second only to OTW.
I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

I LOVE reading stuff like this! lol and I get chills just thinking about that original test pressing that they played for Epic. The 'Thriller' 25th anniversary set should have included the original,un-edited test pressing version of the album.

Michael said that it was, in his own words, "crappy" lol The sound quality was awful and that the songs were muddled together

That's because they initially rushed this project.Throughout the first half of 1982,Quincy was in the studio producing a Donna Summer album, which was finally released in August.Epic wanted a new Michael Jackson album in stores by Christmas,so they had to hurry up and get it finished. It's a good thing that they went back into the studio, took their time and improved the sound quality before turning it in.Still,I'd love to hear that "crappy" early test pressing, lol.

For Bad, Michael did want to release it as a double album. He had written 33 songs specifically for the album. So far, we know about:
Bad
The Way You Make Me Feel
Speed Demon
Liberian Girl
Another Part Of Me
I Just Can't Stop Loving You
Dirty Diana
Smooth Criminal
Leave Me Alone
Cheater
Streetwalker
Fly Away
Someone Put Your Hand Out
Hot Fever (original version of The Way You Make Me Feel)
Tomboy
The Price Of Fame
Crack Kills
Chicago 1945
What You Do To Me

The song "Crack Kills" was recorded with RUN-DMC,who were extremely hot at the time.I recall an interview where they were really excited about working with Michael, which brings up an interesting question: isn't it kinda rude to ask these guys to appear on the album and then NOT release the song? I mean, these guys were really thrilled about the song! They were talking about it in interviews.Michael has a long history of doing this...lol...

I know that Roger Troutman also recorded some stuff with Michael, and he too was thrilled about it.He mentioned it in an interview lol It's a shame that Michael wastes their time.

For awhile ago, I thought that too, but then I read they DIDN'T record it after all. When I was doing research on a MJ book called "For The Record", I happened to read the Run DMC book "Raising Hell" and it basically tells what happened:

From pg.159
-----
Their fans knew the media had it wrong and continued to support them. And Run found distraction from negative coverage in the studio, working on a demo he hoped Michael Jackson would include on his next album. "Run wanted to do it 'cause Michael was the biggest star in the world and Run wanted to be the biggest star." said Hurricane
Run and Jam Master Jay created a great track tht would have their Thriller idol sounding like Jesse D of Staten Island rap-singing group the Force MDs, a rapper with a black suit, a glove, and shades, and Run recalled, "used to skip around and act like Michael." With this new song, Run explained, "We were gonna try to put Michael on a fly beat, have him sing over a b-boy beat."
After Hurricane helped with the demo, Jay told the Beasties' new bandmate, "Go in there and sing the hook."
Hurricane said, "N***a, Ican't sing! Whatchu taklkin 'bout?" "Man, just sing it so (Michael) could know what to sing by the time we get there."
With a sigh, Hurricane entered the booth and sang, "Terrible", he sighed. "Just something so he could hear the idea. We sent it off to him." Michael Jackson's people then invited Run DMC to L.A

Pg.162
-----

Taht night, Russell joined Run and D at the studio where they'd meet Michael Jackson. Jay and Hurricane arrived late. Everyone was excited. "We were like, oh s**t, Michael Jackson coming, that's dope!" said Hurricane. Mike entered the room wearing a surgeon's mask. "I don't know why he came like that," said Ray. "Like we got germs." He also had a pet chimpanzee name Bbbles with him. He shook everyone's hand. "How y'all doing?"
Then he made Russell shake Bubbles's hand.
Run got along with Michael Jackson better than DMC did. Jackson stared at Run's chest and said, "Oh those gold chains are beautiful. Right, Mary?"("Oh whoever," D quipped: Mary was a cook preparing plates of fried chicken and rice in the background.)
"Can I try it on?" Jackson added.
Run removed the chain and handed it over.
"Wow," Michael said while slipping it on.
"He was amazed," D remembered, "Like a little kid."

While ary prepared their meals, Michael tld them he loved "King of Rock," "Peter Piper," and Sucker MCs." The discussed collaborating n a project bt had different ideas about what to do: Run waned him to record the song they'd submitted; Jackson preferred that the costar in a martin Scorsese-directed video for "I'm Bad".
While they talked, Ray said, "the monkey was jumping around the table, grabbing things. It was crazy." And Run began to look a little annoyed, said Runny Ray. "At fist it looked like he like (Michael) but after a while, he didn't want to hear what he was saying anymore."
Mary served plates of chicken and rice. They were eating, said Hurricane, when "the monkey kind of, like jumped on Jay, caught Jay off guard. So Jay damn near threw the Monkey to the ground, like Yo!"
Michael cried "Bubbles!" Then according to Ray, Michael added, "MOney, you can't do that here."
Jay answered, "Well your monkey tried to bite the s**t ut of me. What you want me to do?"
Michael cooed, "Come on, Bubbles, come on, baby." He still wanted to work with them.

When Run saw the Rolling Stone writer again, he couldn't stop praising Micael. "He's the best man in the world." Run said. He described the meeting and said Run DMC would appear on Michael Jackson's anti crack song, and his video. "The whole thing was just great. Michael kept asking me about rap. I asked him about record sales. And when the fried chicken came,I knew he was cool."

They decided to tour Japan instead of recording with Michael
There were a couple of problems:
It was Quincy's initial idea, but Michael was skeptical
Russell Simmons also objected because he felt Michael wasn't black or street enough

here's a article from a newspaper:

"We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

I think in the end, it comes down to which songs would fit than who's featured.

He has songs with LL Cool J, Pavarotti(I'm not too sure about this one), more songs with Stevie(from the 70s AND 80s), Freddie Mercury, Mariah, Whitney, Diana, Ray Charles, Lenny Kravitz.....just sitting in the vaults eek

He also has a set of classical music he wrote and recorded that he did around 1977-1980 that he'll never release mad

When he does this,he's basically wasting these people's time lol They get all excited and mention the collaboration in interviews, then Michael rejects the tracks...lol...I think it's rude and kinda mean. There's another thread about T-Pain talking excitedly about new tracks he just recorded with Michael. It's likely that Michael will reject those songs, too!

Michael needs to stop wasting so many songs! He should change the way he records music. When recording a new album,he should only record about 20 songs only, then pick about 16 of those songs for the album.

If I recall, MJ was supposed to record "State Of Shock" with Freddie Mercury, but Mick Jagger end up recording the song with him. I don't know what happened. Mercury had the better voice than Jagger.

It had something to do with publishing or something, I'm not sure

but your right, State of Shock would've been better with Freddie. They did 2 other songs but those remain unreleased

Certainly Destiny is a kick ass record. I'm not one usually for these choose the best type threads. I mean Heartbreak Hotel is some cool shit. It's hard to 'choose' between the two. Victory is a sack of shit as a LP so doesn't count.

But I would like to suggest that the best Jacksons record is in fact The Jacksons Live. this would be my desert island jacksons disc. Nowhere close to Miles Ahead, but still pretty groovy.

best bits of destiny, off the wall and triumph - plus sugerfoot on the drums and a horn section. 100% live, well ok a few overdubs smile. that's one funky record no doubt about it.

The sheer joy that comes thru Michael's vocals is incredible and the brothers togther is stunning. It's just completely obvious that he is absolutely loving every second. One of the most joyous vocalsts ever throwing it - none of this paranonia, i'm hard done by moaning and whining.

Some of the dates used on this - Mike had a cold - and he still slings Don't Stop without a care in the world.

It's pretty cheap to pick up, regardless of the mastering, you really should have that album, i got it on vinyl double LP with a cool gatefold cover back in 1981 (it's still mint too). I have it on CD too. Vinyl sounds better of course.
