How can anyone say 'All Night Dancing' is filler? eek It's one of the best songs on the album. If anything 'Things I Do For You' is the weakest song. Its an typical average sounding Jackson song, 'All Night Dancing' is funky and original.

See,I really love "Things I Do For You".I think it could have been a single.Musically,it reminds me of Earth Wind and Fire's "Magic Mind".

"All Night Dancing" is extremely fast, but kinda repetitive.I think it's the lone filler track, but it's good filler (if that makes any sense, lol).

This is a great thread, I didn't know anybody paid attention to the Jackson's for their musical efforts anymore. I get so pissed off with so called Michael Jackson fans who totally ignore the fact the he with his brothers wrote some great songs together in a short span of time. Most of them let life get the best of them, but I will always think of them in good light because of those Epic Years, when they formed Peacock Productions. The "Can You Feel It" video was one of the most innovative clips of it's time. Destiny and Triumph are equally as good to me.

Exactly. I don't think "Thriller" is the be-all, end-all masterpiece that everyone else thinks it is. It's a good album and all but it's too diverse and too pop. I actually would have preferred if it had never been made because it's huge success made other R&B acts want to go pop.

Even though 'Thriller' crossed over in a major way,I really don't see it as a "sellout" album. Most of the songs I would describe as R&B ("Wanna Be Startin Something","Baby Be Mine","Billie Jean","PYT","The Lady In My Life").Of course,"Beat It" is the obvious crossover rock track but for the most part,I find the album to be very soulful and even funky at times.

Oh, I never said it was a sellout album in terms of not having any good R&B on it. I just said it's too diverse because it goes off in too many different directions. Every song on the album is good (except for "Human Nature"), but each individual song still isn't as strong or funky as anything he did on the "Destiny" or "Triumph" albums with his brothers or even his own "Off The Wall" album.

I know what you mean. Those horrible MJ fans who think he looks still great and that Unbreakable and Earth Song would be the quintessentiel Michael Jackson sound. On the other hand they don't care about the Jackson's stuff even though Mj co-wrote most of the songs

Honestly, I prefer Triumph over Destiny BUT Destiny is VERY close to being #1. The only song I don't care for is "Bless His Soul" but even that is cool. I happen to love "All Night Dancin." That song is HOT! I should play that again. music

it's cheesy but it has a lovely melody! I wonder what John Lennon would have said about that.
Probably Paul wouldn't have worked with MJ in 1981 if John would have lived...
I know Yoko had a copy of Off The Wall in the Dakota office, so John should have known the album too.

Maybe not Unbreakable, which is about as generic as they come, but forgive me for thinking that there is more than one "quintessential" Michael Jackson sound. The man's career spans 40 years, and different sounds epitomise him at different stages of his life. Motown stuff was playful, optimistic, naive. 1980's was ambitious, sexy, exploratory. 1990's was angry, alone, maddening. And, okay, let's just ignore everything post 1998. lol

My point being that you have to look at all the music to find the "quintessential Michael Jackson". You don't have to like all of it, but it's still there. wink

That being said, I do prefer 80's Jacksons to 80's MJ solo. Thriller is a good record, but I can't listen to it on loop for hours like I can with The Jacksons or Triumph. music

This is one thing I realised early when I became a fan- the man had far more music than just Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad (when I became a fan, that's all there was in his adult solo catalog). Destiny was my first Jacksons album and I collected all the Jacksons albums after that.

I found while MJ's solo harmonies and backing vocals are always good, the harmonies and backings he did with his brothers were so beautiful- they had a completely different character- like they were meant to sing together. And write together. They had a wonderful chemistry. There's also a sadness about Michael's voice on all the Jacksons records. Destiny is just amazing - it was like the Jacksons "coming of age" record- one that came a little too late lol

Ok,I gotcha wink

"Human Nature" is one of my Top 3 favorites from the album (the other two are "Billie Jean" and "Lady In My Life").I think these three songs have aged incredbily well.

I also like destiny, OTW and then triumph being a marriage of the two, the jacksons were at their creative musical peak here. Destiny is my favourite from the 3 though.

This has been a good thread.

I prefer Triumph, but was pleasantly surprised with Destiny the last time I played it. I tend to forget that album when I'm in a MJ mood. But "Bless His Soul," "That's What You Get" "Blame It On The Boogie" are great songs.

Somehow, I don't believe it because wasn't MJ very friendly with them. John and Yoko's son appeared in "Moonwalker". Besides, why would John be so influential on Paul's friendship with him.
