Not sure why some of these people are being named. Some of them weren't even out before the 80s which was the initial request.
I'll throw out Elvis. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

And yet, we have yet to see anyone as intensely popular as Elvis... damn near every single SIDE he put out was a hit. Have you see a list of his singles in a Billboard history book, where they bold the big hits? And all of his hits are bolded? And it's a whole page of them?

Perhaps there are other rock n roll artists that were UNDERrated, but that don't affect Elvis' impact/talent.

I'll throw out Elvis. No the request was for artists who came out before the 90's....the 80's are included. Check my original post. [Edited 1/11/09 11:45am] I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

The Beetles (yes they were pretty good, but I always loved "The Who" over them) Run DMC (they were an act that many looked up...but I just could never get into them) Diana Ross If u don't mind me asking, how old r u? I ask this because u listed Diana and Run DMC as overrated. U have 2 have been around 2 understand their significance. Diana (as a solo artist) was marketed as the black Barbara Streisand in the beginning. She then became this huge "gay" icon. She took what Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge and Eartha Kitt had in the 40s and 50s and became a huge mega star. Sure, she wasn't the best singer, nor was her material the best, but she deserves credit for a lot of the things going on now. She was a disco/dance icon, pretty-good actress, and beautiful as hell. As for Run DMC, they broke racial and chart barriers in the rap world. That is their main contribution. They also started a fashion trend that continues to this day (dressing in warmup suits and athletic gear to perform in). If I had to pick any artist that was overrated, it would be The Beatles. I'm not going to diss their talent or work, but I think that a lot of people love them because they were the first mega-group marketed to America and the World. Sure, others did it before them, but they were HUGE. Then people fell in love with Lennon and Mccartney's work. They wrote excellent songs, but their recordings (to me) were not always stellar. Besides, Ringo thinks he is the be-all...end-all of the group. Other overrated artists to me are Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Presley (he stole everything and marketed it to white audiences), I do know the importance of the artists I mentioned but I don't necessarily need to be 60 years old to know their significance, however, if I think the artists I named are overrated, then thats my opinion. You feel differently, I respect that. You have your own opinion that Bruce and Elvis are overrated, I'm pretty sure there is somebody else who feels extemely different. Its all about your opinion here...I never was a Run DMC fan, I know that they were important to the industry and broke many barriers, I never said they didn't, I never said Diana never broke any barriers or wasn't important either...I just think she had all the right connections because she isn't a strong singer nor actress....IMO. Thats all. [Edited 1/11/09 11:56am] I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Other artists may have deserved it just as much and did not receive it, but that is just a separate list of underrated artists, and doesn't take away from Elvis' body of work.

RUN DMC somebody hit the nail on the head.
When i was a kid listening to hip hop and rap we would always skip these guys, yes they are the onces that entertaiment shows focused on, but in the street, the were just a limp water downed version of hip hop for the masses and the white kids, kinda like Puff Daddy and Will Smith

How could anyone name the Beatles??
My vote goes to Elvis. Because he did not write one single song and 3/4 quarter of his career he was embarrasing

You should be including the Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster(Flash & Melle Mel) Kurtis Blow, Salt N Peppa, Public Enemy, Doug E. Fresh, and The Beasties and many more from the 80's if you're purely going on popularity. This was a time when crossover happened, it was always going to happen, Pity rap isn't half as interesting, colourful or as fun as it was back then. ![]() [Edited 1/11/09 13:22pm]
