this album is blowing me away. i usually dig marianne faithfull albums - she's a hip old bird - but the arrangements and song choices and collaborators on this album are completely out to lunch (in the best possible way). dig it: (the songs in bold are are kicking my ass the hardest) Disc 1: "Down from Dover", (originally by Dolly Parton) "Hold On, Hold On", with Cat Power (originally by Neko Case) "Solitude" (originally by Duke Ellington & Eddie DeLange) "The Crane Wife", with Nick Cave (originally by The Decemberists) "Easy Come, Easy Go" (originally by Bessie Smith) "Children of Stone", with Rufus Wainwright (originally by Espers) "How Many Worlds", with Teddy Thompson (originally by Brian Eno) "In Germany Before the War" (originally by Randy Newman) "Ooh Baby Baby", with Antony Hegarty (originally by Smokey Robinson) "Sing Me Back Home", with Keith Richards (originally by Merle Haggard) Disc 2: "Salvation", with Sean Lennon (originally by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club) "Black Coffee" (originally by Sarah Vaughan) "The Phoenix", with Kate and Anna McGarrigle (originally by Judee Sill) "Dear God Please Help Me" (originally by Morrissey) "Kimbie" (originally by Jackson C. Frank) "Many a Mile to Freedom", with Jenni Muldaur (originally by Traffic) "Somewhere (A Place for Us)", with Jarvis Cocker (originally by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim) "Flandyke Shore", with Kate and Anna McGarrigle (traditional, but sung famously by Nic Jones)

How'd I miss this? I must have it now! i'm not a big fan of antony hegarty (as you well know ), but the duet with him on this album is one of the most UNIQUE things i've ever heard. i can't say i find it 100% pleasant, but i'm very entertained and captivated by the noises they managed to make. on the other hand, the decemberists cover is sublime, and "children of stone" is transcendent.

this week, i'm catching up on things that i was mildly interested in. forgive me for any broken images, if there are any, i'm a bit tipsy.
pleasantly surprised by the ballads disc of Beyonce's disc, since it was the uptempo stuff i was looking forward to (which kind of sucks, Single Ladies aside). loving the Killers, a band I never though I'd even give a second thought when they first came out. Kanye is also surprisingly good, considering I'm not a fan. Britney and Pink are great as well. Enya is Enya, no more, no less.

I dare you to try it...you'll be surprised.
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |
