RADIOHEAD...JUST CANT GET INTO THEM ?

i loved their " ok computer " album from the mid nineties which i thought deserved all the critical acclaim it got as a great album but i just havent been able to get into any of their albums since...been listening to "in rainbows" in the last week and it starts well but then just becomes boring for me...never been a great fan of thom yorke's singing style and his nasel delivery is becoming annoying....maybe its just me but i cant get into it anymore.....

I was never really big into them until I copped "KID A" in 99. That CD blew me away. I then picked up all the other releases down the road.

You have to be in the mood for Radiohead. I wouldn't put on one of their discs at a party.

You have to be in the right mood for Radiohead, true. A friend recommended OK Computer to me a few years ago, and I think the hype is deserved. I don't have Kid A. I got In Rainbows, and I mostly like it, but "Bodysnatchers" is killer. I also dig "All I Need."

Fell in love with them with Ok Computer but then went back and fell in love with The Bends! THEN fell in love with My Iron Lung EP and the Airbag EP. Like Kid A a lot and I have a special place for Amnesiac. I kinds stopped getting into them around Hail to the Thief which to me was disappointing...In Rainbows is OK but nothing beats Radiohead from The Bends thru Amnesiac...

Can't believe you can't get into KidA. I have revisited the Bends and that album is amazing.

If you like OK Computer you should get The Bends which is just a straight out amazing rock album. One of the best of the 90s. I like Kid A and Amnesiac but they are a bit more esoteric, I do have to be in a certain mood for them.

The Bends is still the group's best album IMO. OK Computer is just behind, followed by In Rainbows. Those are the three I really love. I really have to be in the mood to listen to one of the others.

they're a tough band to just "get into" mainly because they arent doing really structured songs, i'll take the "Bends" "Ok Computer" "Kid A" and most of "In Rainbows" as their better stuff, i felt there was a "mess" between Kid A and In Rainbows, especially "Hail".

I love Kid A, but that is the one that polarized most fans. As an album (along with Amnesiac, which is leftover songs from Kid A) it's fine. But it seems that they got too far into that ambient/techno sound that they don't write many songs with structure anymore.

Radiohead isn't for everyone. My girlfriend tried to get into them so that we could listen to them together . . . but she couldn't do it.

The Bends is my absolute favorite, followed by OK Computer and Hail To The Thief.

Side note: has anyone bought The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth Of All Time DVD? Those animations are insanely bizarre! Love it.

I have the same problem. I've tried a few times over the years. Almost all of my friends are or have been into them to varying degrees.

I just can't get into them and there's a lot of somewhat similar acts that I like. Tried again with In Rainbows and it still didn't click.

Perhaps I should go back and revisit OK Computer and Kid A, which were my previous stabs at trying to get into them, and see if they do anything for me this time.

why don't you do this. Listen to Pablo Honey then listen to the bends to see the unbelievable transformation of this band. I think that's probably what kept us hooked, waiting for that new invention, which largely they have delivered.

I know those 2 albums pretty well, as that's what my friends would listen to when we were driving around in the summer getting high.

I have faith that Radiohead will one day be one of those bands where something just clicks for me and I'm suddenly gaga over every single thing they've done and be raving about them non-stop and everyone else will be saying "Yeah, we know, we were there already".

It just hasn't happened for me yet.

Thom Yorke's solo cd The Eraser is the one that turned it around for me.
I couldn't quite get into them until I heard that & then it all fell into place somehow. biggrin

I don't get into everything they put out, but I respect them greatly. I love their willingness to take risks and change.

With regards to song structure, I always know that on first listen I won't "get it".

I watched In rainbows on IFC, the whole album was performed and I was floored by how good they are. You can say its studio programming, effects, etc.. but when you see it live its impressive

sometimes i feel like i want to like them but i just can't. i remember when OK Computer came out i went to England for the first time and all I remember was getting so ill I couldn't even get up out of bed while reading about the hype. for some reason I associate getting sick and the hype around that album at the time.
then several years later, they played at the Shepherds Bush Empire where i used to work and they did two nights and to be honest the music was so cold and "digital" it did nothing for me. i felt like it was more about what noises the gadgets could make versus something more tangible.

i also saw them at Glastonbury and that whine of Thom Yorke's really got on my nerves.

i love radiohead but i can see why some people wouldn't, so i don't go out of my way to defend them. but to those who say they are "trying" but can't figure it out or can't get beyond thom's voice, the only thing i can offer is to put on a pair of good headphones and listen to the details and try to soak in the mood of the music. for me, their albums go way beyond his voice. there's so much to take in and to take apart.
