That Parliament 2-disc set Tear The Roof Off is very good to get your feet wet on their stuff.
But I'm more of a Funkadelic guy myself. The big difference between the two is, Parliament has a horn section & had most of the big hits. Funkadelic is weirder, the songs are slower and longer, and that's where most of the heavy guitar workouts happen. Think of it this way: Hendrix would have been in Funkadelic; Maceo Parker WAS in Parliament. I'd suggest picking up Let's Take It To The Stage and Standing On The Verge Of Gettin It On first. Those two are incredible all the way through. In case you do downloads, all the Funkadelic stuff is on emusic.com for about 25 cents a tune. The Eddie Hazel album shown here is good too, just got that for Xmas! But honestly I don't like it as much as the Funkadelic albums from the same period.

You should pretty much get Funkadelic album released on Westbound Records. Funkadelic (Self-Titled) Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow Maggot Brain Let's Take it to the Stage Standing on the Verge of Getting it On I agree these are some of the great ones for Funkadelic. Another is Music For My Mother, a two disc collection of Funkadelic cuts while they were on Westbound Records, While the solo EP album of Eddie Hazel is another one to get too. Good luck in your search. For me, I had started with Parliment's Uncle Jam Wants You album, but then I had found Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow on CD and was hooked on Funkadelic! After that I managed to get every single Funkadelic album on CD that was on Westbound. I'm a maggot 4 life! [Edited 1/12/09 21:48pm] If u want a Sam Cooke album, where would u go? 2 tha wreckastowe!

That's JAMS FROM THE HEART. If you moved on the special Rhino HandMade release of GAMES DAME & GUITAR THANGS you would have scored those tracks mixed in as a bonus. test

Funkadelic 'The Complete Recordings 1976-81' four disc set.
I picked this gem up for just ten english pounds a couple of years back. Includes Hardcore Jollies, One Nation, Uncle Jam wants You and Electric Spanking of War Babies. nice detailed booklet too.
