I wish I could dig his shit but it sounds like it was made in the 50's or something. I'm cool with the old school but damn that shit just sounds old.

I don't get this forum sometimes. lol Something that's often heard here is, "They don't make music like they used to!" So somebody's goes and "makes music like they used to," and now there's complaints about it sounding too much like music they used to make.

lol Hahah that's so true.

I like it. It's fine. But it's such perfect replica of what's come before that it's completely pointless. I'd rather just listen to the original stuff.
exactly. It's been done before and done better. it's why I don't get people creamin' their pants over Amy winehouse.

No, I definitely hear something modern when I listen to Amy. She's not a straight up replica of the past like for example, Duffy's album is (even though I like that one).

"The Way I See It [Columbia, 2008]
In 1996, Saadiq turned the climactic Tony! Toni! Toné! album into a virtuoso history lesson. Six years later, he tried to dazzle Maxwell in his own reflected glory. Six years later yet again, he outdoes himself with a fearless return to retro. Singing with the obliging malleability of last Temptation Dennis Edwards, emoting with the sweet specificity of miracle worker Smokey Robinson, he goes Motown with so much joy in one-man-band craft he'll not only convince the girl he's sweet-talking that this is forever, he'll convince you. This late in the game he's got no time for filler. Even the Katrina lament "Big Easy" stays within the parameters of a genre he inhabits from the inside out. A"

STFU, Dan. razz

I'm not one of those people. I just want good music. And I know what Saadiq is capable of. this album just feels like cheating to me.

I don't have a problem with dude reaching back and doing a song or two like
this but i don't want to hear a whole album from him doing a smokey robinson
or motown album. Sure it's better than him doing the typical hybrid r&b rap
album with 5 guest rappers on it. Hey i'm old school as it gets but i'm a
70's - 80's guy. I like some of the stuff from the 60's but if i'm going to
sit down and listen to a motown album i'm gonna listen to the originators
not the duplicators. lol Seriously, i think most saadiq fans just want
him to be himself instead of impersonating a sound he's not known for.

I take this as his effort to bring real musicianship and old songwriting to the forefront. I dont expect him to only just do this sound, but you gotta understand from a musician point of view too that this was a challenge.

Matter of fact Saadiq said this was the hardest and most challenging album he ever made. I give him big props for it. There is only so much Motown repackaged new volumed re-released re-releases out there...it is nice to hear something from a talented modern artist doing his take on the sound...just like the Minneapolis Sound just doesnt stay dead...the new schoolers keep bringin it back and I say go for it!! It aint WHAT IT USED TO BE but it SHO IS FUNKY TO ME!

And there it is. The dilemma of today's black musician.
