Help. I know nothing about Soul Music.

Recommend some good albums for me to listen to.

I'm not really interested in 'mood' music, and even though I like neo-soul, I want something grittier. So can somebody recommend a good soul or soulful album that's relatively recent?

I would love to hear modern updates to stuff like:
Wilson Picket
Solomon Burke
even Janis Joplin.

Please, no:

Erika Baddu (sp?)
Amp Fiddler
Deangelo
Colline Bailey Ray (sp?)

[b]I wasn't born until the 1970's, so my immediate , off the top of my head reccomdendations from previous eras need a minute:

Otherwise, from the MENZ,

Al Green
Bobby Womack
Teddy Penedergrass
Johnny Guitar Watson

best to check out greatest hits compilations so you won't have to search around too much for the gems

Listening to this kinda soul music either requires a lot of moral fortitude, for the flesh is weak. Otherwise, get ready to have tons of

Raphael Saadiq's latest might be up your alley, except it is 100% retread of 1960's material. not covers, but might as well be.

That's an excellent cd. I liked his "Gospeldelic" one too. It's like a mish mash of elements from Parliament, Sly Stone, Bobby Womack, and California soul from the late 60's early 70's. music

Rashaan Patterson- Feels Good... it's a little light on the grit, but at least with the vocal arrangements it sounds a little vintage-Prince-ish

From Raphael Saadiq's latest cd, "The Way I See It" His entire cd is in this vein with early 70's slow jam elements as well.

How you gonna ask for Soul Music and then ask for recent acts I had my list ready. lol Frank Mccomb is good and Glenn Lewis although going towards the "neo soul" as you put it.Saadiq's album is good. Al Green's latest album is good too, although it doesn't top his 70s work.

I've amassed a large collection of classic soul to include much of Al Green's stuff.

That's the only reason why I want recent stuff by newer contemporary artists--cause I have alot of the older stuff from classic artists.

But I also don't want suggestions for this crappy stuff I hear on the radio passed off as R&B and soul. It's like saying Blink 182 is good old fashioned rock and Roll lol

Also, please, NOBODY mention Janet Jackson .... I mean, I'll puke if you do. Seriously.

There are no contemporary versions of the names mentionned, just stick to your collection. Nowadays its called neo-soul, R'n'b which are in no way related to Soul music

But know what? I would seriously reccommend the new Al Green. It's a bunch of collabs with young artists, but musically it still hits the target. All organic. I swear I sat and watched a bunch of session musicians sit and listen to it and as gawd is my witness everybody was gasping for breath and rolling around on the floor like they caught the Holy Ghost in an Alabama Baptist church. That was pretty much the Musician equivilent of a "Two Thumbs Up
thumbs up! thumbs up!"
