When The Pawn

I really enjoyed this 1999 release by Fiona Apple. She displayed a deep passion in her dark/personal lyrics that is lacking in today's young artists. Moreover her piano playing, vocals and the overall musicality on this album are extremely good also. My personal favs from this album are "Get Gone" "On The Bound" "A Mistake" and "Fast As You Can". It's interesting how most people wrote her off as a wacko after her speech at the '97 VMA's, however if you go back and listen to what she was saying, it was the brutal honest truth. I personally feel she's musically more interesting and more relevant than many of the more popular female artists currently on the scene. On a side note her cover of the Beatles' "Across the Universe" for the "Pleasantville SDtrk" in '98 was well done also. She desperately needs to release another album.

She's cool. I love When The Pawn but i still prefer Tidal - it's not as angst ridden.

I loved When the Pawn as well. Sadly, I think a lot of folks slept on it and she may have a hard time being appreciated again like she was during her "Criminal" height. Hope she keeps putting out new music though.

I'm a huge fan of this record. Excellent songs, musicianship, production, attitude. I hope we see something new from Fiona soon, although I agree that she won't likely be received among the mostly awful crap that passes for music today. I hope she's not too discouraged to crank out a few more records - I think she's great.

Great CD...love Fash as you Can and A Mistake...

Artists that get up and give speeches as if they were more informed just because they're famous bother me...but I'll let it slide because the music is so good. smile

EDIT: She's really f**king hot too. drool
