Jeff Beck, the best still wideley unknown guitarist

Jeff Beck starts a major tour that will take him to Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Great Britain and North America on January 23rd. For the tour, he will be supported by distaff bass guitarist Tal Wilkenfeld; drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (recently toured worldwide with Herbie Hancock, then Chick Corea/John McLaughlin) and keyboardist David Sancious (ex E-Street Band member, has played with Sting, Zucchero, Eric Clapton, Santana, Billy Cobham, Stanley Clarke and has released several solo albums).
Beck, not to be confused with the singer Beck (Hansen), is often regarded by fellow guitar players as the best living guitar player. He is one of the nine nominees vying for a spot in the five that will make it to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Announcement of the five nominees is expected any day now by the Hall board of directors. Ceremony is Cleveland, Ohio on April 4th.
In his career, Jeff Beck has done sessions with the likes of: Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Mick Jagger, Diana Ross, Cyndi Lauper, Wynonna, Stanley Clarke, Narada Michael Walden and Roger Waters to name a few. He has won 4 Grammys in his career and has achieved two platinum albums (BLOW BY BLOW and WIRED), plus several gold albums : TRUTH, BECK-OLA (both of which featured Rod Stewart as his lead singer), BECK BOGERT APPICE, JEFF BECK GROUP and JEFF BECK WITH THE JAN HAMMER GROUP LIVE.
For those that wanna peep out the man, his latest album is called PERFORMING THIS WEEK...LIVE AT RONNIE SCOTT'S JAZZ CLUB
http://www.eagle-rock.com...dia_id=975
The album is a hot display of the British guitarist's fine work on many tunes from his multi-genre career of blues, rock, funk, ballads and jazz-fusion.
Check him out if he comes yur way.

Here are a few clips of him live:

You're talking to OOJBBF (One Of Jeff Beck's Biggest Fans): http://prince.org/msg/8/203625

This is the same band I saw during his 2006 U.S. tour with the exception of David Sancious woot! replacing Jason Rebello on keyboards (and Randy Hope-Taylor on bass). I'm not jumping for joy because Jason Rebello was a slouch on keys (he's just the opposite), but because David Sancious is such an unsung musical hero. I did an extensive post on him here some time ago. The guy's a beast on keys & guitar.

Since I can't find it right now, i'd suggest those that want a quick David Sancious primer...

...check out his 2nd solo album Transformation (The Speed of Love) from 1976.

The cynic in me says that because Jeff Beck should be in the RRHOF, is the very reason why won't get the nod. confused
If he does i'll be pleasantly surprised.

Yeah I'm thinking he won't get in. Chic or Bobby Womack may get in before him. confused Jeff Beck does seem a sure thing. Then again, people all are on Metallica's, Run-DMC's and the Stooges' jocks, lol.

‘Performing This Week…
Live At Ronnie Scott’s’

On 30 March 2009 Eagle Rock Entertainment are proud to release a sensational live Blu-ray from Jeff Beck, “Performing This Week… Live At Ronnie Scott’s” [ERBRD5020]. A new Jeff Beck release is always an event and this is the first ever concert Blu-ray approved for release by Jeff Beck [DVD released simultaneously] and includes special guest appearances by Imogen Heap, Joss Stone and Eric Clapton. This release features live versions of classic tracks from across Jeff Beck’s stellar career including: “Beck’s Bolero”, “Led Boots”, “Scatterbrain”, “Where Were You”, “Angels (Footsteps)”, “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers” and his now iconic version of “A Day In The Life”. Eagle was the first visual music company to embrace HD and their commitment to the new technology continues with new additions to their Blu-ray catalogue.

Jeff Beck is true rock legend, described by The Telegraph as \"the first of the great guitar showmen\". From his time with the Yardbirds in the sixties, through the Jeff Beck Group and throughout his solo career his unique guitar style and constant desire to explore new musical areas and sounds has won him the admiration of his peers and the adoration of legions of fans. In 2007 Jeff Beck performed a series of concerts at the renowned Ronnie Scott’s club in London. They became the must have ticket of the year with a packed audience every night of the famous and the fans. Jazzwise hailed, \"an absolutely jaw-dropping display of the most exciting, imaginative and inspirational jazz-rock guitar witnessed in years.\" This Blu-ray features performances recorded across the different nights and presents the best version of each track. “Performing This Week… Live At Ronnie Scott’s” captures a stunning talent at his best, The Times review of the show lauded, \"Perhaps the greatest living guitar virtuoso... Combining astonishing technique with a blissful nuance he exercised an almost supernatural control of his fretboard.\"

Tracklisting:

1) Beck’s Bolero 2) Eternity’s Breath 3) Stratus 4) Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers 5) Behind The Veil 6) You Never Know 7) Nadia 8) Blast From The East 9) Led Boots 10) Angel (Footsteps) 11) People Get Ready - with JOSS STONE 12) Scatterbrain 13) Goodbye Pork Pie Hat / Brush With The Blues 14) Space Boogie 15) Blanket – with IMOGEN HEAP 16) Big Block 17) A Day In The Life 18) Little Brown Bird – with ERIC CLAPTON 19) You Need Love – with ERIC CLAPTON 20) Rollin’ And Tumblin’ – with IMOGEN HEAP 21) Where Were You

As an exclusive to this Blu-ray release, Eagle include a seven track rockabilly set with the Big Town Playboys: 1) Race With The Devil 2) Crazy Legs 3) Train Kept A Rollin’ 4) My Baby Left Me 5) Matchbox 6) Baby Blue 7) Honky Tonk. Also exclusive to the Blu-ray are an interview with Jeff Beck on the rockabilly set and a Big Town Playboys interview Other bonuses include a rare in depth interview with Jeff Beck talking about Ronnie Scott’s, his band, the setlist and his guest performers.

London Lite raved about Beck’s “visceral, fluid music-making that other guitarists can only dream of”. With a stunning band complementing Jeff Beck perfectly [the full line up was Jeff Beck – guitar, Tal Wilkenfeld – bass, Vinnie Colaiuta – drums, Jason Rebello – keyboards] this is an essential purchase.

Ndeed!!!

Here's a track from'76, featuring Jeff Beck on Guitar, David Sancious on Organ, Synth, and Fender Rhodes, and Narada Michael Walden on Drums (oh, and Will Lee on Mutron Bass)---from Narada Michael Walden's Album, "Garden of Love Light"

...and Sancious practically puts on a keyboard/Synth/Organ clinic on this track, "The Sun Is Dancing", from the same album (Ray Gomez on guitar this time, though...)especially at the end of the tune:

David Sancious

I still remember the summer of 1980...I was trying to dial the radio to my favorite Funk station, OK-100, and on the way up the dial, I passed this on another airwave, and my jaw just hit the floor....

My first thought was ..."What the Fuck Time Signature is That?", lol
(OK, now that I listen back, 7/4....?)

Jeff Beck - Space Boogie

Jeff Beck - Guitar
Simon Phillips - Drums
Tony Hymas - Keyboards
Mo Foster - Bass

Up to that point, I had been aware of Jeff through his guest spots on other artist's albums ( Stevie Wonder, Stanley Clarke, Narada, etc...) but after this I started investigating his solo, and early work. I grabbed "There and Back", "Wired", and "Blow By Blow", and then worked backward from there....

[b][i] No question the guitar community knows who he is.
He is widley acclaimed by fellow axeplayers, but my original blog was meant to express that the general public does not know who he is. He wanted to call his 1999 release WHO ELSE? simply BECK, but the realization that singer Beck (Hansen) was already using the Beck moniker.
Jeff has never received the commercial acclaim that has bee afforded his peers that come from the same Surrey, England area: Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, both of whom think he is the best.
When Jimi Hendrix first went to England, one of the first things to do on his short list was to meet Jeff Beck. He was so impressed with the then Yardbirds leaf guitarist, that he often hung out with him and they would later for several nights in 1968 in New York City and Steve Paul's Scene Club.
Jeff considers Hendrix, John McLaughlin, Les Paul, Buddy Guy and Django Reinhardt to be some of the greastes axemen ever. He also has expressed fondness for rockabilly pickers like Scotty Moore and Gene Vincent. A funny story involving Prince. Before launching a USA tour with Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas in support of GUITAR SHOP, they rented out Paisley Park in Minneapolis, MN. Prince was standing in the shadows watching, and Jeff froze from intimidation. He would later say he was too shy to have Prince watch, showing his great respect for 'the purple one'. There was intimation on his part to be produced by Prince as well.

Guitar Gods Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck Set to Share the Stage at Japan Concerts

Two former Yardbirds are set to share the stage: Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck have announced they’ll play two shows together at Saitama, Japan’s Super Arena, on February 21st and 22nd. The duo have performed together at album sessions, benefits and festivals in years past, but these concerts mark the first time the pair have ever shared the bill for major arena shows. How mighty are these two axmen? Clapton ranked Number Four on our list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, and Beck came in Number 14. If by some chance you’ll find yourself in Japan for this epic exhibition of guitar gods (or you just happen to live in Japan), take note that tickets for these concerts go on sale January 17th.

Both guitarists have roots in the Yardbirds, that blues-tinged British band that also lists Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page among its famous alumni. After the Yardbirds’ hit “For Your Love,” Clapton exited the band in 1965 out of protest of the group’s move from the blues to a new pop sound. Clapton’s replacement, ironically enough, was Jeff Beck, who was fired from the band in 1968 before they ultimately disbanded. Jimmy Page formed a band in late 1968 called the new Yardbirds, but you more than likely know them by the name Led Zeppelin.

Of course, Clapton and Beck went on to have pretty huge post-Yardbirds careers as well: Clapton as a member of Cream, Blind Faith, Derek & The Dominoes and a successful solo career, while Beck fronted the Jeff Beck Group and also enjoyed a noteworthy solo run. And now, more than 40 years after the original Yardbirds disbanded, the two will finally be together on a stage in Japan.

*****
Jeff Beck's tour starts in Australia on Jan. 23rd. So far no USA dates have been announced, but some are expected in July after he appears in Montreal, Canada at the Jazz Fest International on July 6th In a recent interview with an Australian newspaper he indicated his set list would be changing and have some new material from his next studio album - his first since 2003's JEFF release.
Jeff Beck will be featured on the new single "Black Cloud" by Morrisey. It is from his new album YEARS OF REFUSAL due in February.

Beck is indeed, one of the greatest ever, and he respects Prince's playing tremendously.

2 words come 2 mind with regards 2 Beck's playing:

Fluid. Tone.

Also, he knows how 2 use his right hand... no pick.

I'd agree with this.

I read a lot of guitar magazines and Beck is consistently praised - both by writers and contemporaries - and it's pretty much considered cast in stone in those circles that Beck is one of, if not THE , most underrated/ underappreciated guitarists ever.

By his own admission, though, he has never played the fame game and has been difficult to work with, so maybe those things are a factor.

.. or maybe he has just never found the right material to appeal to a mass audience - and why should he? Play what you enjoy, simple as that.

I can't say I am a fan myself, as I am yet to hear a Jeff beck song that really does it for me, but I certainly get the feeling, like I say, that he is very highly regarded by the musicians of this world.
This is not an exit

I don't think the public knows too many guitarists that aren't also singers/ frontmen. Maybe there's ten or twenty that have gotten a little famous for being characters like Slash, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page... hmmmm... I'm trying to think of a non-singing guitarist where I could yell out the name at work and everyone would go "I know who that is!" And there's not many.

But every serious guitar player and 70s rock fan knows who he is, and most of those consider him one of the best there is.

I listen to him a lot in the Yardbirds, he was on their best stuff, and is probably one of the guitarists most responsible for developing the sound of hard rock - just listen to the solo in Shapes Of Things, that surging feedback. It's amazing that was made in 1965 or 66, it doesn't sound like anything else at the time, not American blues, not other heavy English bands like the Who and the Pretty Things, but totally original. If anything it sounds like Led Zep's first album, which was made three years later.
