this one may rattle some chains, but as talented as Wendy & Lisa and Meshell Ndege Ocello are, I thought they'd both be major institutions - Meshell is almost up there with Prince in my book.

The C.D. he released in 99 was actually very good...
Great singer, and apparently a good song writer

I'm more into electro and 80s new romantic now, but I'm still a R&B fan(just not from this decade lol)

[b]Anthony Hamilton
He is soulful and always executes well live. Perhaps that element that makes him so good, is that same thing that keeps him from rising above midstream.
As someone stated before, this industry is not interested in creativity (or talent), just a quick buck off of the marketable non-talented ones.
Well guess what, the bucks have diminished, so now what industry?

Tevin was actually billed as the "next MJ" and he was in fact in alot of ways nod esp during his "child stardom" days.

He didn't take the pressure of this industry though.

And I got somebody...

She had the FULL package of somebody you'd expect to blow up nod

1. Can sing her tail off.
2. A looker and sexy.
3. Light-skinned(She can pass the brown paper bag test lol and it IS a big factor, at least in the states shrug).

I think the nude pix hurt her career though.

It's all about image nowadays. I saw Ledisi a few months ago when she opened for Kem and she talked about how she wanted to leave the music business a few years ago because she got tired of the label and management telling her she needed to be Beyonce. disbelief There is ZERO room for any diversity in R&B or Pop music today if you want success. It's pretty disgusting. confused

true ...the underground copying of cd's must be expanding as people can't walk into a record shop and buy this music very sad...

D'Angelo - he was kind of big, but I expected him to go all the way (if it wasn't for the drugs, he may had made it there)

Lupe Fiasco - he's not r&b but he represents the real hip hop right now

Common - nope he's not R&B either but in my opinion, he still hasn't received the respect and fame he deserves
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I think a lot of the artists mentioned in this thread ARE well established more or less and I´m kinda surprised to see them mentioned here. They are quite famous and successful, aren´t they ? ( Well, I must admit, Tevin Campbell IS kinda under the radar these days, but come on , Rashaan Patterson, Anthony Hamilton and Tony Rich ? They are pretty successful, aren´t they ?)
What really surprises me is that Cristion never really broke through. That group had a lot of soul, could really sing, was never cheesy and their videos were cool, too.
I remember the Purple Rain parody video they did ( Let Them Know ), and it was hilarious, and the other songs they did reminded me of Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield , like their song Player´s Ball or whatever it was called.
Maybe Jay-Z wasn´t promoting them right, or maybe RocAFella was not the right label to take care of them but Cristion was definitely a project with a lot of potential.

Yes, I remember her. I believe that her mother is a blues singer. She and Amerie were artists that complained that Beyonce was taking their looks and stealing their shine.

I think he has with his last two releases be and finding forever produced
by Kanye West going platinum and finding forever debut at number 1.
He's reached mainstream with kanye. It would have never happened without him.

I also thought Terence Trent D'Arby (now known as Sananda Maitreya)would have been bigger. He can sing his arse off.
Additionally Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings. She may be the best raw soul female entertainer in concert.
I think Chante` Moore is also deserving of way more acceptance - the beautiful sister can sing.
Also Terisa Griffin
