2. A looker and sexy.
3. Light-skinned(She can pass the brown paper bag test and it IS a big factor, at least in the states ).

I think the nude pix hurt her career though.

I saw Ledisi a few months ago when she opened for Kem and she talked about how she wanted to leave the music business a few years ago because she got tired of the label and management telling her she needed to be Beyonce. There is ZERO room for any diversity in R&B or Pop music today if you want success. It's pretty disgusting.

I think a lot of the artists mentioned in this thread ARE well established more or less and I´m kinda surprised to see them mentioned here.They are quite famous and successful, aren´t they ? ( Well, I must admit, Tevin Campbell IS kinda under the radar these days, but come on , Rashaan Patterson, Anthony Hamilton and Tony Rich ? They are pretty successful, aren´t they ?)
What really surprises me is that Cristion never really broke through. That group had a lot of soul, could really sing, was never cheesy and their videos were cool, too.
I remember the Purple Rain parody video they did ( Let Them Know ), and it was hilarious, and the other songs they did reminded me of Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield , like their song Player´s Ball or whatever it was called.
Maybe Jay-Z wasn´t promoting them right, or maybe RocAFella was not the right label to take care of them but Cristion was definitely a project with a lot of potential.

I also thought Terence Trent D'Arby (now known as Sananda Maitreya)would have been bigger. He can sing his arse off.
Additionally Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings. She may be the best raw soul female entertainer in concert.
I think Chante` Moore is also deserving of way more acceptance - the beautiful sister can sing.
