I still buy CDs and vinyl records too and always will as long as they make them. The only way I'll ever download music is if the internet companies give out free high speed internet service because I don't have the time to sit and wait for three or four hours just for one song to download using dial-up internet service. As for paying for high speed internet service, hell, I'm grown and got too many other bills than to be wasting my money on a high speed internet service. Not everyone is rich and not everyone has mommy and daddy to pay these bills for them. And, the even bigger point, it's rediculous to have to pay for an internet service just to get some music that should be available in a record store anyway. I'll never do it...ever.

Me too. And I want to add to this an important part of picking music to hear based upon mood.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet.

I have several thousand physical CDs stored in racks and organized according to genre; soul and funk, in this section, disco and contemprorary dance, here, jazz instrumentalists here by insturment, jazz vocalists here and subgrouped by male and female, Japanese pop over here, etc.

Physical CDs are important to me because when I'm in the mood to hear some music I don't know exactly who or what i want to listen to, just that I'm in the mood for some music.

I may have a general idea of whether I want something upbeat or chill, instrumental or vocal, ballad or mid-tempo but as to which specific CDs in this genre I haven't yet a clue.

So I begin to peruse the racks and as I scan certain selections jump out and hit me emotionally like unexpectedly running into old friends I haven't seen in a long time.

So now my hands are full of muxic I'm actually excited to hear.I generally put on 5 at a time and play them on random shuffle.

When one owns several thousand CDs trying to keep track of them in your head (or even searching your data base on a computer screen) does not supply the same kind of emotional relationship resultant from past familiarity as stumbling upon the jewel case and artwork.

This is the only way I can imagine staying in relationship with the older material in my collection.

I have thought of backing it all up on hard drive and storing it somewhere else just for safety sake, like if there was ever a fire or something.

Does anyone know how many gigs or terra bytes it would take to store 2000 hours of digital music?

I still buy CD's, sometimes on Amazon, but mostly out of used music stores, the price is always good, and the music sounds exactly the same. I rarely spend over $7-$8 for a cd, mostly $5. so I make out fine.

I only buy from I-Tunes for random songs that may pop in my mind. I also trade music from time to time; you get new stuff, and you get to introduce a friend to something new, so everybody wins.

For the most part it's either Amazon, CD Baby, and iTunes mp3's for various reasons.

1. In many cases the "Big Box" and Bookstores ever shrinking floor space for music, usually leaves me having to order it, this bugs the hell out of me: When I hear something I wanted NOW not three or four days later. Besides Jazz (not "smooth jazz") Cd's cost more than any genre. I'm not sure why this is but I refuse to pay it.

2. Album and Cd's collection taking up living space. Collection 3800 and counting. I had all of my music put on a music media server. Apples Nano has all of my one/two/three hit wonders or artist for which I have their best songs over a number of their albums/Cd's. Ipod Touch has only complete albums. I was only listening to about 20% of my collection now, I'm listening to 85%/90% more of my collection.. I packed up the albums/Cd's and put them into storage don't miss them nor the clutter.

3. It still buy an occasional Cd.. usually indie artist(Cd Baby), used, or out of print stuff. My rules as always I have to like 95% whole album/Cd or I don't buy it.

TD3 has the right Idea. I used to buy 2 or 3 CD's since the 90's and that many Cds pile up over Time. I say rip them to a hard drive and archive them. Mp3's work on my Ipods, zunes and Phone and Xbox.

(I've got two hard drives and one as a back-up in case of a failure.)

So Willlie, TD3, (or anyone)...

How big of a hard drive would I have to get to store say, 2000 hours worth of CDs?

I still buy CD's, mostly. I only download a few here and there. I use Rhapsody, so I can listen to what I want without having to burn the CD. My band released our project in CD form on CD Baby and we've got mp3s in various places, too.

I recently read an article that said when you hear that "sales of CDs are plummeting" that in the indie world, that's actually not the case. People mostly prefer CDs.
