How come Ricky Fante didn't get big? I really dug this song when it came out -in '04, I believe -but then never heard from the dude again.
Was he at all succesful in the States and just fizzled in Canada? Or did his career fall flat before it started? [Edited 1/2/09 23:43pm] "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Yes I loved his album
He also had a song "Shine ", on a soundtrack (Robots) Would love to hear more from him. Maybe his voice is too gravelly for most. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Maybe because he was getting too much comparison to Otis Redding, a virtual god in soul music. Those are some big shoes to fill.
Rather than talking about Ricky Fante the individual, all the press was about "that guy that sounds a lot like Otis." I don't think you can build a career on novelty when that novelty is a carbon of some other beloved star. Whether Ricky knew it or not, he was perceived almost as a tribute artist even though that's not what he meant to be and you can't start a new career and get popular singing in a "dated" style if people see you as copying someone else, especially someone so revered as Redding. I think Ricky could be popular in Vegas doing a Redding show on the order of Purple Reign but if there's any hope for him to have a fresh career I think he's going to have to try a more contemporary style and show us what he's got that doesn't sound like someone else. Otis Redding?
Maybe he just wasn't that good or if he was, he was too much of a gimmick, I guess... :dunno: I don't know much about dude other than people kept thinking he could play MARVIN in a movie. Personally I thought he was cool but I guess his style didn't fit in with what was coming out. I mean he wasn't exactly neo-soul... [Edited 1/3/09 18:24pm]

Is that video shot at Paisley Park?
???? Never heard of him before. Maybe he should'a changed his name to something more...I don't know..."mature". By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

I really think a problem with the promotion of this single might have been the video. I realize that most artists don't have a huge amount in terms of financial backing for their first(?) album, but the vid looks cheap as hell. Paisley Park-ish, for sure.
Perhaps a more literal interpretation of the lyrics might have been a better idea? Actors -perhaps hired from a college drama department or something to keep costs lower -playing the parts of the characters in the song? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
