Janet's Damita Jo album....I just re-discovered it

Ok, I dusted this album off before Janet went on tour. I added the songs to my iTunes playlist. When the album first came out, I thought it was just an "ok" album. Now, listening to it almost 5 years later, I see that the album came out before its time. It sounds better than 80% of the albums on the radio now and it had a progressive r&b sound for 2004. I LOVE IT!!

I agree. The Superbowl performance really hurt her. Not to mention after all of the boob drama, she poses topless for the album cover.

I loved this CD. If Rihanna, Britney, or Ciara would've recorded the same CD, it would've been a huge hit. Janet suffered from the backlash of "boobgate", and was blacklisted from MTV and many pop stations which killed the CD. It was definately better than her "20 YO" follow up.

It's a good album, but way too long. I prefer Discipline.

For me, Damita Jo is right up there with her blockbuster 80s albums.

I won't disagree with that either. I have several trax in my iTunes (including the Discipline album). I think if songs like Island Life, My Baby and Sexhibition were included on Discipline, it would have been damn-near perfect. I like Discipline, but it tends to die out on me toward the end. Then I hear the title track and get excited again.

Control over RN? It's not bad, but a little odd.

that album should have sold atleast 8 million world wide and atleast 3 or 4 million in the usa. IT was really fun. I love that album one of my top three janet albums.

Yep it up there for me to. It the most played Janet album and it is as Cinnie said, up there with her 80's blockbusters. I think her last two albums could be used as coasters, but still even though I don't listen to them they are still better that a lot of the pop/rnb albums out there.

I always go back to this one so I obviously like it. I was actually going to start a thread like this. I listened to the album two times all the way through. I even liked the weak tracks. It's meant to show a variety of all things Janet and while it's pretty shallow, it's overall great musically. of course, you need to get the Japanese edition with the two bonus tracks!

With Control I can throw on any song any time and I will listen the whole way through. Rhythm Nation is strong but I don't always wanna hear stuff like "State Of The World" and "Livin In A World".

I can understand the latter, but "State of the World"?

I KNOW!!!! "State of the World" is funky and has a very strong message. Now, if it was one of the remixes, I could see.

great album.

get rid of the cringy interludes, un-imaginative title, replace 'warmth' with 'put your hands on' - you would have a great album.

Not that it's a bad song, it's just the topic that I don't really have a need to play through.

Not sure if I like the album as a whole but many of the tracks are very strong and it was hard for me to realize they were not going to become hits cause I was so sure she would have hits. I remember many loving all nite don't stop and if that were the first single, it would have overshadowed the superbowl cause it's that good

Yeah that is really sad.

I found Damita Jo to be better than All For You and 20YO however...it really sunk after I Want You..they could have cut out all them interludes, My Baby, Warmth ((I LOVE WARMTH but right after the Superbowl it should have been a bonus track)), Moist ill Truly, kept Slolove and Just A Little While. And add Luv Me as a itunes Bonus Track.
Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.
