The "White Album" by The Beatles goes for 5 figures

Low-numbered Beatles LP hits five fab figures
December 30, 2008
by Robin Platts

Almost exactly 40 years after the release of the Beatles’ self-titled double album, usually known as The White Album, an eBay auction closed, and one of the rarest copies of the album changed hands.

Most significant is the fact that this U.K. mono copy is #5 in the original numbered pressing. The first four went to John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr and never have made their way into the market, so the appearance of the fifth copy is very big news. Naturally, it resulted in a significant winning bid. According to the item’s seller, this copy entered the market when it was sold by an unnamed musician who had been given the album by Lennon during a visit to his apartment in 1968.

Dontcha just hate when you've bid on the 5th copy of the White Album for 28,447.20 then someone comes along and takes the auction for 28,448.20 at the last second?

I read recently about their first recording as the Quarrymen surfaced not too long ago (That'll Be the Day & In Spite of All the Danger--they appeared on the Anthology) and was bought by Paul. The book I was reading called it "the rarest record in the world." lol

I wouldn't say it's the rarest, but there's only one copy and it must be pretty valuable.

Would this technically be the first available copy to the public, then?

I can't imagine paying that much for an LP, no matter how rare. Then again, I'm not rich -- I'm sure whoever bought this is.

Great conversation piece though . . .

That puzzle actually sounds pretty cool. Can you imagine matching up puzzle pieces that are solid white?!

I'd frame it when I finished it.

eek

As I recall, it was also a two-sided puzzle. Can't remember which album was on the other side...
