From my understanding, Aretha was only the third choice. First Gm wanted Stevie, than MJ and then came Aretha.

George Michael had nothing to do with the duet partner on this song. Clive Davis sent the tune to Aretha for her approval to do it after it was submitted to him by the song's publisher, It was Clive Davis that asked Aretha to do it as a duet with George Michael,whom she was not familiar with until Davis explained who he was to her. He sent it to Michael as well, whom would later say, "Quite simply she's the best. As much as I love a lot of other female artists, there's no one who touches her."

In regards to live performances - she and Michael did the tune in 1987 at a George Michael concert in Detroit.

Second, he WAS searching for duet partner. After the Stevie and MJ duets didn't happen, he said yes to Aretha.
But I agree, it was not George's decision to workd with Aretha, it was George who was asked, not the other way round.
