Did arena rock and heavy metal damage rock?

Watched a special about the different genres of rock and when it came to the mid 70s and 80s, it seems many rock legends aren't fond of this period because rock lost a certain "intimacy" that it had with the smaller venues and acoustics

opinions?

That's a tough question. I enjoy some arena rock and some metal. Some say alternative rock and grunge damage rock.

I think music just took a different direction for alot of people.

There's still plenty of rock out there, but the people listening are the same ones as before. The new audiences have chosen other music.
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

never bought into ideas like the "faceless" bands of the 70's hurt Rock. I feel that anything that slowed Rock down, was a cause. I mean you can site "too much" of anything "damaging". So bands like Motley and Jovi, arent damaging, but they opened doors for all the Wingers and Warrants. Just like in the 90's when Pearl Jam and Nirvana opened the doors for others, and then this decade you have the Hinders,AlterBridge and Daughtry's of the scene.
