Gorillaz most popular band on MySpace Nice...

Photograph: Stephen Shugerman/Getty They may not have released an album in 2008 – or even promised a reunion – but Gorillaz have more friends than anyone in the world. At least according to MySpace. The animated British group topped the social networking site's list of the most popular acts of the year, vaulting past Bullet for My Valentine and Amy Winehouse with a staggering 682,875 MySpace "friends". Of course that was at the time of the press release. As we go to press, the number is up to (gulp!) 686,177. If we could make 4,000 friends in less than 24 hours, well ... our parties would be very busy. Other celebrated artists include Coldplay (525,110 friends), Lily Allen (462,159) and MIA (399,858). Oasis and Imogen Heap ("only" 351,484) round out the list. Although Gorillaz did not have any official releases this year, its leaders – Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett – remained busy with their Monkey: Journey to the West project. The "circus opera", soundtrack and music for the BBC Olympics coverage seem to have attracted whole stadiums of friend requests. Madonna's 4 Minutes was MySpace's most successful video in 2008, followed by the Verve's Love is Noise and Fatboy Slim's BPA collaboration with David Byrne and Dizzee Rascal, Toe Jam. The Toe Jam video involved a great number of naked people, which can't have hurt.
