Preppie by Cheryl Lynn

Anyone know anything about this album? I see it's produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis? What is it like?? I love me some Cheryl Lynn!

I don't think Jam and Lewis did the entire album, but it is a good album.

Wow, that's a blast from the past. I vaguely remember that album and my recollection, it was an uneven work. Nothing to do with the enormous talents of Ms. Lynn, I didn't think Jimmy Jam and Terry Louis production fit her. I've never been a particular fan of there's. I think their talents served the mediocre singers - like cough, Ms. Janet Jackson - but Ms. Lynn voice got lost in their over produced music projects. (IMHO) I'm a big fan of hers too. You can hear some of the songs from "Preppie" on U-Tube.

P.S. My favorite song from that album was Encore.

I wouldn't call their talents mediocre either. This person, obviously, is not that familiar with their background.

Sure, Janet is probably the most famous Jam and Lewis protoge, but their work was superb. I really loved their work with Solo, Sounds of Blackness, SOS Band, Alexander O'neal, Cherelle, and Change. All very talented people/artists and not mediocre.

Good reminders !
Yeah, saw Sounds perform in the early 90's and Ann Nesby was a powerhouse when she came onstage and blew the roof up !

Actually your examples...in my humblest opinion gives substance to my point I was trying to make. I didn't like their work for either Ms. Adams nor Ms. Austin. Enormously talented singers like Ms. Lynn but Jam/Louis "wall of noise" to me just overshadowed some amazing voices. Folks like Ms.Jackson, need such. That young woman couldn't carry a 12 songs Cd without a beat or production twist. You need to be distracted from the fact Ms. Jackson is a mediocre singer at best.

OK, that's ur opinion, but u shouldn't nock Jam and Lewis' skills. Anyway, the topic of conversation is Cheryl Lynn's Preppie album.

Back in 1983,I remember seeing this album in the record stores. The cover features Cheryl wearing a "preppie" shirt with the alligator on it (if I'm not mistaken?) and she's surrounded by two guys.I think this is the album that contains "Encore",one of her finest singles.

Patti Austin is the God-daughter of Quincy Jones. She is mostly known as a Jazz singer, but has had quite a few hits on the pop chart. Her biggest being "Razzmatazz", "Baby Come To Me" (With James Ingram), "How Do You Keep The Music Playing" (with James Ingram) and "Heat of Heat". She has more hits, but this are probably her most recognizable. She also sang a duet with MJ on Off The Wall entitled "It's the Falling In Love". You should check out her work. She's an amazing singer.

She did right to work with Jam and Lewis because "Encore" was a great jam and a sho-nuff ass shaker. Cheryl has a great voice but she needed some funk behind her so her great voice wouldn't be boring. Jam and Lewis did that for her as well as the previous people she had worked with. You gotta have some funk behind it to make it sound good. I mean, what do you get when you put a great voice out but don't put no funk behind it? The result is Shitney Houston.
