I prefer Prince's even to dare I say it, the original version...

I remember doing a post on this very topic a few years ago. I think they are all great versions, but all make the statement in completely different ways.

In Bonnie's as well as George's version, they are ready to accept the fact that the relationship is over.

Prince on the otherhand, knows that it is over but being the man that he is, he will not give in so easily. He even tries to bribe her with sex, towards the end of the track.

Overall, I like Bonnie's the best.

Prince's version sucks big time..

I prefer Bonnie's, then George's... never heard Kenny's...

The idea for the song came to Reid while reading an article about a man arrested for getting drunk and shooting at his girlfriend's car. The judge asked him if he had learned anything, to which he replied, "I learned, Your Honor, that you can't make a woman love you if she don't."[2] Reid and Shamblin were both country music songwriters, who according to some accounts originally wrote the song as a fast, bluegrass number. Upon slowing down the tempo considerably, they realized the song gained considerable power. It then made its way to Raitt.

Bonnie's is my preference. I love her voice and emotion but I like George's too.

Bonnie Raitt has the most sincere and believable performance.
And the track is the best by far. (A lot of it due to Bruce Hornsby's keys)

I like Prince's version the best, and actually like Bonnie's version the least. This is definitely the soul ballad that Prince made it into - I think he owns this song now, kinda like how Whitney owns I Will Always Love U. Too bad it didn't become a hit.
