How important is marketing?

How important is marketing to an artist? Is it the element that makes them popular or a superstar? What are some of the functions of marketing?

Everything. I'm not going into all of it,take a Marketing class or buy a book and read up on this. I went to school for 4 years studying Marketing which I have my Degree.
