Besides success, what makes Tony! Toni! Tone! better than Mint Condition?

Besides success, what makes Tony! Toni! Tone! better than Mint Condition?

So I was at work and an R&B discussion came up where some dude said The Tonyies (whom I love) are a better band than MC...why?? He said "cause they had more hits and sales"...LMAO!

Now did they have more success? Yeah, But were they REALLY a better band?? Umm you'd have to put the crack pipe down if you think they are...

Songwriting = MC>>>3T
Production = MC>3T (very close)
Subject Matter = MC>>>3T
Hits = 3T>>>MC
Vocally = Stokley>>>>>Raphael (by far...very far)
Creativity = MC>3T (very close)
Longevity = MC>>>3T
Uptempo songs = 3T>>>>MC
Ballads = MC>>3T

Don't tell me y'all think the Tonyies are a better band too??

If you forced me to choose,I would pick Tony Toni Tone.Their 1996 album 'House Of Music' is INCREDIBLE.

It comes down to this. "Songwriting" might be an easier win for Mint Condition than just "Songs".

House of Music is one of my favorite albums ever. and Wild Child is one of the greatest songs ever recorded IMO, but then again, That does not make them better than MC...I mean, have you heard From the Mint Factory!?!!?!??

While i consider the Tonies House of Music to be a masterpiece and one of
my top ten albums of all time, i still consider mint to be the better band.
They are more versatile musically. I always dug the interludes on their cd's
and rock tracks. I believe the band members are more versatile as well. Most
of the members are dual musicians. Stokley is a vocalist, drummer, keyboardist,
and guitarist. People automatically assume that mint doesn't have uptempo songs.
They do. They just don't release them as singles because they have made
their bread and butter off of ballads but in concert the band always show their
chops.

They are both great ,why discuss who is better, the Mint might be more versatile, and the tonyes are a little bit more fun, but i love them both equally.

And while I admit it's a decent track, it's also part of the problem with the Tony's, for me. If I wanna hear Al Green, I'm gonna put on Al Green. Not 3T doing Al Green. 'Holy Smokes and Gee Whiz' was a Stylistics bite. Raphael Saadiq's new album is one giant tribute to classic soul. Saadiq knows how to write a great tune, but he wears his influences a bit too high on the sleeve...

i agree but, it's fun to compare different artists to see what everyone else's opinion on things.

Damn...as much as I am a big 3T fan, i never really put it in that perspective.

"thinking of you" = al green
"holy smokes" = stylistics
"wild child" = tower of power
"let's get down" = one way (cutie pie)
"still a man" - bobby womack
"don't fall in love" - the temptations
etc.

LOL. Regardless tho, the album is in my top 10 and them soaking up their influences into modern production along with their creativity just shows how great they were compared to other groups (boyz ii men, jodeci, blackstreet etc.)...

Your "he wears his influences a bit too high on the sleeve" comment got me thinking though....

Four or five ballads on one album are still too many. When I was growing up, since I couldn't get an album as often as I could get a 45 or a 12 Inch (because someone else was buying), the only artists in which I bought albums were the ones that I knew were only going to have about two (maybe three tops) ballads on the album such as Prince, Rick James, The Barkays, Lakeside, Cameo, etc. If I liked a ballad, I would usually buy the 45.

So seeing how I grew up, you can see why I would be pissed as living motherfucking hell when things changed and the majority of artists made slow music only.

Really?? I'm your exact opposite cuz I'm a for sure ballad guy. LOL.

I'd rather an album have ballads that outweigh the uptempos, than vice versa. That why I like House of Music better than Sons of Soul (only 2-3 ballads out of 15 tracks??) due to the fact that its more balanced as well as their musicianship improving.

This is why i dug this album more than any tonies album. Besides let's get
down they said screw the trends at the time and took a step into classic soul.
They could have easily stuck to the formula they had been using which was
mixing their style of r&b with a lot of hip hop samples. I think that's why
this album was less successful chartwise than the rest of their albums.

For me you can through success out the window when comparing any artists, longevity and what you do with it is far more important.
