I was in highschool in 1988, I can name one or two MJ songs from then. I don't think I could name a single George Michael song from his whole career Le prego di non toccare la macchina per favore!

One of the best things about 80s music is that their was no ONE dominate artist, so much music to choose from and each artist had a different style and audience. You ask who was "greater" in the US, MJ or George, it depended on who you ask. Some would say George Michael, but Im going to say MJ because that's what I listen to but not everybody did. Faith was more adult oriented but Bad was more excepted by kids. MJ was indeed more well-known than George but that doesn't mean he was greater. You ask about media coverage, again diversity. You had MTV, BET, Casey Kasem, Night Tracks TBS, FNV to choose from. MTV showed mainly George, only Dirty Diana got rotation, yet BET showed mainly Michael Father Figure got rotation on ML. VH1 showed both, but mainly adult contemporary artist.

Wow, you have bad memories. Not memory, I don't think I ever heard of them. I hated 80's music, I listned almost exclusively to classicrock and hard rock in high school Le prego di non toccare la macchina per favore!

That's cool but '80s music rocked to me. To each his own tho.

In fact the only people who think of him as being still a super star nowadays are his hardcore fans. 2008 had bigger stars than MJ. Remember, an artist should prove his craft every now and then in orther to justify his status. I'm just stating facts. In 1988 GM was not bigger than MJ. MJ's tour was more successful than GM's. His album outsold GM's. What else should I name for you?? U must be a GM fan. Oh...I'm sorry.

Maybe the best thing to say is "you don't remember much". But actually he said that he only listened to hard rock and classic rock during that period. [Edited 12/21/08 14:47pm]

tours being successful does not always mean charts though in mj's case it was
I find it sad you were in high school and don't remember George. I agree with whoever said George was big with adults and mj with kids, that's really true!

I remembered "One More Try", "Father Figure" and "I Want Your Sex" played all the time on BET during 1988. The only MJ videos I remembered playing on BET regularly was actually "Bad" and "Dirty Diana". "Another Part of Me" was another one that was played often on BET as was "The Way You Make Me Feel" (which was usually always on "Video Vibrations"). "Smooth Criminal" and "Leave Me Alone" were played heavily on MTV mainly because it was connected with "Moonwalker". George was all on MTV more often than Michael though I remembered the MTV coverage of the "Bad" tour.

are you sure you were 4? I thought you were 2 years younger than me. I was 4 when the song faith was all over the radio in late 1987, but maybe you turned 4 in 1988, is that what you mean? I was 5 by then.

yeah I remember the song Bad being everywhere for most of kindergarten, and seeing Captain EO at Disney, I didn't know the rest of the singles until the mid 90's though I would get a little bit of deja vu, so I think it's possible I could have seen them and totally forgotten cause after all, I didn't recognize mj in the Bad video though I was 4, cause I knew the thriller vids before it and what mj looked like.

The Bad album was the first cd that my mom ever bought for our very first cd player. Imagine that. The year was 1988. [Edited 12/21/08 17:38pm]
