A: I think of all the albums I've made, Listen Without Prejudice, even though I know it's got some great stuff on it, is the one I listen to the least. I was 26, and I really was sick of where I was -- I suppose I took myself a little too seriously. The title for 18 years has been misinterpreted: The only reason it was called Listen Without Prejudice is because I had just lost all my black radio. I had won a couple huge awards at the AMA that traditionally went to black artists, and I lost all my radio overnight. . . . It's a little too white for me -- I thought it would be taken more seriously, I suppose. Whereas now I don't take anything seriously. I want to ask the black radio listeners... do you think this was the reason, or one major reason it wasn't played enough? I mean, Waiting For That day surely's not black... but it's basically a blues song, he lifted the chords from the Stone's You Can't Always Get What You Want! But he's not a black radio artist! Faith just struck a chord. One More Try was R & B # 1 but no other singles were. It was also # 1 on the R & B album chart. George Michael wasn't looking at Faith as an intro into R & B audiences. IF he was, why abandon that audience you were cultivating? Listen without Prejudice isn't Black Radio friendly, which was why it was passed over. well, did he ever come back to R'n'B properly? Songs like Freedom 90 and Soul Free were the blackest things on LWP. Older was influenced by Brazilian music... I think Fastlove, Spinning The Wheel and Star People are the only black sounding songs.

I was never into George Micheal or Wham for that matter,
but I did like a couple of their songs: Father Figure, Careless Whisper, and Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.

Actually I could prescript everyone thise GM (related) albums: Make It Big Faith Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1 Older I think his vocals on Songs Of The Last Century are great, but I find some songs boring. But this album has a lot of class! Btw, GM's voice sound still clean on that one, but somewhere around the year 2000 his voice became smokey and raw and deeper. I don't like that. He sang Careless Whisper and other songs in a lower key than on record. Now don't say one's voice lowers sooner or later. Stevie Wonder still hits the same notes like it was 1973. With less smoking weed maintaining a voice is possible.

To me, those 2 are undeniably the best. I've come to appreciate Older much more as time has gone on, but it still feels like a little something is missing.

Listen without Prejudice isn't Black Radio friendly, which was why it was passed over. I know he has always been very proud of Faith reaching #1 R&B. As for the singles, none of the others reached #1, but all except the title track charted and did rather well ("Father Figure" #6, "Monkey" #8, ""Hard Day" #21, "Kissing a Fool" #33, and "I Want Your Sex" #43). Add in "Careless Whisper" #8 and his #5 duet with Aretha -- he was a pretty successful R&B artist. I would've expected "Praying for Time" to at least chart... maybe "Freedom 90" as well. I was surprised "Freedom 90" wasn't a hit on black radio. "Kissing a Fool" surprised me with its crossover success. "Father Figure" should have been a R & B #1 I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I don't find it inaccessible but can I suggest that it's not so much boring as feeling vacant, like he's singing in a nightclub without an audience. But there's also the Sinatra allusion which is what I guess he was going for. But for me 'Older' is far and away his best work. I like 'Patience(Amazing)' album better than Listen w/out Prejudice which I guess is fourth because 'Faith' is an easy second. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

There are songs on Listen Without Prejudice that make me cry. It's beautiful.
For Christmas I got GEORGE MICHAEL TWENTYFIVE. It's awesome. It's got FREEK, which wasn't released in the states but I had heard about it and saw it online along with AS, with Mary J. Blige. I do have to say that I didn't know about IF I TOLD YOU THAT with Whitney Houston. Not bad. Did anyone catch the George Michael documentary that was, is? on youtube? I would love to own it. I don't know if it's been distributed for sale. [Edited 1/6/09 19:46pm] MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop!
