Holiday Jams Of All Time!!!

There are certain holiday songs that always get us in the actual spirit of the holidays. Also, there are holiday songs that bring back warm pleasant memories of holiday seasons of yesteryear spent with people who are so dear to us(family and friends). What holiday songs get you in the spirit of the season and/or bring back those pleasant memories??? Allow me to take ya'll to SOULVILLE with my selections. O.k. everyone, I'l start the list with a few of my favorites

Christmas Just Ain't Christmas(Without The One You Love)-The O'Jays...AMEN TO THAT!!! A classic Philly holiday song. This one always set the tone for the holiday to me. Which each passing year, the message behind this song becomes more relevant.

Merry Christmas All-The Salsoul Orchestra...This is one of those songs that is so full of joy and bounce. This jam got a lot of airplay on R&B radio stations in the late 70's when it came out.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen-Take Six And The Yellowjackets MY MY MY!!! what a song this is. This is one of those songs that you want to hear over and over again. Please note the acapella breakdown by Take 6 in the middle of the song before the Yellowjacketscomes in with the instrumental flavoring...GOT TO LOVE IT!!!
Signs Of Christmas-James Brown...Probably the FUNKIEST holiday song EVER cut and put on wax!!! A true classic...INDEED!!!

Mistletoe And Me-Issac Hayes...OOO WEEE!!! This song is OFF THE HOOK brothers and sisters!!! The arrangement on the song is awesome and Ike's voice is so full of soul and compassion. This song don't get played on the radio during the holidays like it should. This track is the sound of love...THE REAL DEAL... so grab that special someone and hold them tight...IT'S TIME FOR LOVE...BABY!!! This rank amongst the greatest stuff that Ike has ever done...yeah I rank this track right up there with the "Hot Buttered Soul"album. Pssst Pssst...let me tell you a secret, I actually find myself playing this song when the holiday season is not in at times.

I'll Be Home For Christmas-The Stylistics This song excels no doubt because of the falsetto vocals of lead singer Russell Thompskins Jr.. Simply amazing.

Another Lonely Christmas-Prince And The Revolution This may be the only Christmas/Holiday song in music history to have the word "horny" in it. This song was the B-side to "I Would Die 4 U"single from the Purple Rain album. A great song with a nice guitar solo from Lil Man(that's what I call Prince at times)at the climax of the song. He also sings this song with such conviction that you feel that perhaps this woman that he cared deeply for actually did "die on the 25th day of December". A great B-side single from...Lil Man.

Merry Christmas Baby-Otis Redding...The man with the voice that screams "urgency" delivers another soul stirring performance.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas-Lou Rawls Ole Lou soothes and grooves on this jazzy little holiday number. A great song from a great vocalist.

Christmas Forever-Freddie Jackson...This R&B vocalist who came on the scene in the 80's really connects with the listener on this song. Great heartfelt song. One of my holiday favorites.

Can't wait to go to the store and get me some egg nog and get this holiday season on the room

Hey I look forward to some good cooking tomorrow at my grandmother's place. Look forward to collard greens, potato salad, fried chicken, potato pies, honey and pineapple glazed ham, chicken dressing, cake(baked grandma's style...you know how SHE do!!!},apple cobbler.OOO WEEE. Hope everyone have a Happy Thanksgiving Day with your families and friends.

I did it intentionally to see if anyone would catch it...seriously!!! This was a copy and paste post I did from another website this time last year. On the original post, I said there would be a few that I will not mention on purpose. Another obvious one I left off was Silent Night by the Temptations...OOOPS!!!(LOL)

'Silent Night' by Cyndi Lauper was always one of my faves, and then last year a VERY emotional experience happened while listening to it and it's now one of the most powerful songs in the world to me...

other faves...

any Bing Crosby Xmas song, Kenny Rogers doing "Carol of the Bells" and (redface) The Spice Girls "Christmas Presents"

I forgot a couple of others.

Little Christmas Tree - Jackson 5 I don't know which cd it's on, prolly some Christmas special. It's sad and cute..."Little Christmas tree looking sort of sad and lonely just like me. No one seems to care, they just went away and left it standing there all alone on Christmas Eve." Ok, I haven't heard the song in eons, and I'm always shaky on lyrics, but it's something like that.

My Gift to You - Alexander O'Neal I have his Christmas tape, which is pretty good, but I love this song, and I will playing it constantly since it's the season, and it has an important message about giving.

Ain't that the truth. I was rummaging through my music collection and found the cassette cover for "A Motown Christmas" from 1973 that was rereleased in 1992. Yep, so where's the cassette??? ACK!!! Must search high and low for it this weekend.

I just heard on the radio "Silent Night"- En Vogue...funky divas style. Sometimes I miss them.

Eartha Kitt's "Santa Baby" gets about as much airplay as "Feliz Navidad"- Jose Feliciano...like about 10 times a day.

funkyslsistah...Great call on Alexander O' Neal's My Gift To You Christmas record. I just remember I have that on cassette myself. The title track of that song is great as well as the "Fake" soundalike "Sleigh Ride".

"This Christmas" is my favorite of all time! Second being "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" by the Jackson Five. The Whispers did a version of "This Christmas" called a "Song for Donny", same music but different lyrics. If you haven't heard it, it's on their Greatest Hits, and the best thing about it, is that it's the same music, but different lyrics, so you can listen to it anytime of year.

Yeah,I love how The Whispers took Donny's song ("This Christmas") and turned it into "A Song For Donny" when he died.It was a beautiful tribute song.In 1978,The Whispers also did an excellent Christmas album called 'Happy Holidays To You' which contains a slowed-down version of "This Christmas".I'm gonna look for this CD when I go shopping this weekend!
