Christina Milian: 'Def Jam Dropped Me For Rihanna'

December 18, 2008
By Anthony Jones
Link

Christina Milian is on the cover of her first magazine, the latest issue of Rap-Up, since being dropped from her record label in 2006 and watching former boyfriend Nick Cannon marry Mariah Carey.

She tells Rap-Up that the reason her former label, Def Jam Records, dropped her and other acts around the time was to focus on other "Umbrella"-wielding divas. "It was a budget cut, I believe. [Def Jam] probably got rid of projects like mine to spend the money on [Rihanna]," she said.

Milian was dropped soon after her 2006 album, So Amazin', was released to disappointing first-week sales. "It was embarrassing. It was a week after my album got put out. I would be in my room a lot of the time crying by myself," she told the magazine.

She also saw her ex-boyfriend of two-and-a-half years, Nick Cannon, marry superstar singer Mariah Carey. "I was surprised like everyone else. I was like, 'Really?' It just seemed like a weird match, but I was happy for him. I always feel Nick works hard to get what he wants, whether that be women-that's how he got me."

Now Milian is set to release her first album on MySpace Records, tentatively titled Dream In Color, in early 2009. Milian also said a certain high-profile music star helped her realized she should get back to her music.

"I bumped into Janet Jackson at a club. We talked for an hour and I was telling her I don't know if I'm gonna do this, and she was like, 'Girl, do not let them stop you. I'm a fan and you make good music.' She's a person I actually looked up to growing up, so her telling me that really was the day I was like, 'I'm not gonna let these people hold me down. It's time,'" she said.

Her first single, "Us Against the World," is available on iTunes and the album is expected to include a collaboration with Kanye West.

Christina is a great person always has been, there are however, alot more reasons for her dismissal, and budget cuts isnt the top reason, and the excuse of "first week sales" is a lie. There was a big game going down at DefJam with Jay Z and Rihanna, and while Jay still had control, things had to be his way. Christina's "independant" thinking while at DefJam was not cutting it with the big wigs at DefJam and Jay mainly. When this album was being worked on she was insistent on using her producer Dre, who wound up her Boyfriend. That was NOT who the label wanted in place, and things got out of hand. When her album was due to come out, they delayed it as the record was being shipped, as a further SHOT at her, no one knew when it was coming out, they didnt even notify retail, then they just dropped the record in the following week unannounced. This situation is very similar to why Amerie was constantly ripped off at Sony and then later dropped (although, she did walk out on them) that situation being orchestrated by the Knowles family, and lo and behold we have this situation, and funny how Jay (beyonces husband) is involved. Do i see a trend?

The main thing is that neither played the game and got dumped for it, that simple, and now both are better off on their own, because they are better for it. And dont get me started on what that jerk Nick did to her.

Umm hello...this is all documented stuff, just do some searching and you will find it, i know you just like to jump and talk shit on my posts, but this is all documented stuff all you have to do is actually use the internet and search it out, shit, even search this forum and you will find it. As for Nick, HELLO he blew her up on the radio with that DEAD BEAT ghetto ass drag queen who got fired from her show.

Exactly. And it's common knowledge that Matthew Knowles is a freaking cut-throat of a business man when it comes to being sure his Princess Beyonce is on top of the mountain and no one else from her generation.

True.
Had to search for the credits, heheh ...

Composed By
Anders "Bag" Bagge/Arnthor Birgisson/Christina Milian/Corey Rooney

Though when her debut-single ("A.M. to P.M.") came out, i seemed to notice somewhat similar vocal-arrangements as in "Play"

Here, here. An ex-boyfriend of mine had to negotiate splits with him for projects they wrote together for other artists on the label right when "Independent Women" hit. That mothafucka is like the black GODFATHER, for real

If you listen closely, the entire chorus is mainly Christina singing, I can hardly hear Jennifer. This is common with a lot of J-Lo's songs, she never seems to sing her choruses.

She looks just like the singer Cassie in this pic. I didn't even recognize her. I like Christina though, so I hope everything works out for her career wise.

Don't be surprise if that is the type of people backing him. Jay-Z as well. Too powerful.

She was cute but I don't feel a huge loss.
Sorry to hear her major gig was pulled from under her but there's lots of singers that never got that far in the first place.

Christina needs to stop. You can't rewrite history. "SOS" was given to her by LA Reid and she turned it down. That song went to Rihanna and helped solidify her career. Christina just can't recognize a hit record. Def Jam then dropped her when her record of songs produced by her boyfriend weren't hits.

This is the record BUSINESS. She wasn't producing hits and turned down an easy smash record that was a hit across several genres. She got what she deserved.
