Thanks Thump,

That was some good morning entertainment and a good notice on your part. The similarities are undeniable but I don't think we'll ever know for sure if or how much Morris was influenced by August Darnell (Kid Creole).

Hey wait a minute... wasn't Morris' character in Purple Rain called "The Kid?"

It's not as simple as saying this guy copied that guy. Both these guys stage personas are expressions of an arechetype which I'll loosely call "The Playa."

archetype ar·che·type (är'kĭ-tīp')n.

1. An original model or type after which other similar things are patterned.

2. In Jungian psychology, an inherited pattern of thought or symbolic image that is derived from the past collective experience of humanity and is present in the unconscious of the individual. Also called imago.

Like so many lesser knowns from the jazz era before them the slick suited cool playa has been an archetype. Cab Calloway was probably the most well known playa archetype from before but there were many other cool dudes out there.

Kid Creole and Morris Day are carrying on the tradition but camping it up and doing it in a way that pokes a little fun at themselves while simultaneously saying it's cool to be cool.

Since Jaime Starr wink was the architect of the Time's sound and stage concept he very well may have given Morris the framework for his onstage character.

Prince was a huge fan of Kid Creole.I always thought that the Morris Day persona/image was inspired by Kid Creole.

Prince's character.

He might have been influenced, but they say Prince was showing the Time videos of Muhammed Ali to get them in the spirit of being badass. I think like all Prince creations, the Time & Morris come from a lot of places (including of course what Morris himself brought to the character)

But I see Kid Creole as being much less crude, much less old school pimp, a bit more classy, and less obnoxious & cocky.
