Thriller made and ruined his career, more or less.
It's natural though.. if you had seen Michael during '69-'81 you knew something unusually big was going to happen. As for Michael being the greatest child singer ever; definitely. To me Stevie Wonder really started at around the age of 18-20, while Michael was already amazing at +/- 12.

That is a true statement. I just got to thinking. If this question was asked differently, we could get different kinds of answers. If the question had been MJ is/was the best child singer of the 70s, I would agree. If you go by decades, you could really come up with a great list. 50s - Frankie Lymon 60s - Stevie 70s - MJ 80s - ???? (Johnnie Gill, maybe) 90s - Shanice (maybe) 00s - ??? 90's - Tevin Campbell? 00's - Sammie?????

i fought over this onee but i had too settle it like this.
you know you're the greatest when people always compare themselves to you. how many times have you heard younger artist being sold as the next young michael jackson? which in itself i think its a curse, but thats besides the point that alone proves my point....

And that's because, little MJ did not give a fuck about what people thought about him, not to mention the fact that he had not been "cursed", by "Thriller" yet. I wouldn't say he didn't care about what people thought. Did you not see the Jacksons movie? MJ cried after a lot of performances as a child because he felt he didn't do well. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

As for Michael, I don't think it was just the voice that made him great as a child. He was also a dynamic performer and always seemed much older than he was. The funny thing to me though is sometimes when I listen to old J5 records like "Maybe Tomorrow", "Aint No Sunshine" and others, it seemed like he had more soul at that age than he did as an adult solo artist. I sometimes think some of the lyrics in the songs he sang in the J5 were too mature for him, but he always sang with such conviction that it was actually believable. Like I still get goosebumps whenever I hear "Who's Lovin' You". That song is a rare case in which the cover is better than the original and in this case it was originally sang by The Miracles of course, but Mike just really did his thing on that song. He's always been so talented. Absolutely!

All those old YouTube J5 videos just take me back. I was SO IN LOVE with MJ back then (I was in about 4th grade when these came out). I used to just DIE when he came on TV. And the LIVE show I saw. . .I think I couldn't breathe for about a week! [Edited 12/17/08 21:12pm]

Alot of the J5 motown material is, not surprisenly, sub-par. Name many great boyband records LOL. Even worse, Motown were still more about singles then actual albums so filler was rife. Still, young Michael could turn an average song into a good one, and thats a damn good ability to have. Tevin Campbell had it too.

Stevie is a great chill tingling singer now but he didn't compare to little MJ. Proves 1 thing. MJ really is the King of Pop.
