at this point, both singers got their voices shot, sadly. though mariah's is definitely still better live than whitney's.

Then? Whitney. Now? Neither.

I would say Whitney in her prime.....interested to hear her voice now after the drugs. Mariah has a superior vocal range compared to Whitney. Whitney would crush her in a gospel competition. Mariah has better albums and songs..obviously more hits than Whitney.

Mariah had a bigger range than Whitney,,,,and was FAR more intersting.

As it has been established already though, both dames are pitiful now.

Another versus thread? Okay, I'll play. Mariah. I saw Mariah live back in the day and she was amazing. Whitney had a great voice but has limited range and tends to sing in the same key. I can't take that for very long. Not even from Babs.

Mariah. Simply because she had a Wider Range. But, I personally preferred Whitney's voice, because it had more power.


I know the drugs ruined Whitney's voice. But, WTF happened to Mariah's voice? Was she a smoker or on drugs, too??...I'm clueless how a singer just loses there ability to sing.

I think Mariah used to smoke but no longer. I do think she tries to take care of what's left of her voice because she's had nodules for years and as she matures it gets worse. Surgery was recommended but she doesn't want to go that route. When Julie Andrews had her nodules removed the doctors screwed up and she lost her voice for two or three years.

For me i always prefered the quality of Whitney's voice (its not all about the range you know). She had more control and power it seemed - and id always thought she had a better stage presence than Mariah too. You can hear a deterioration in Whitneys voice on The Preachers whife, but ive no idea when she started using drugs - i think this was her point where her voice lost some of its ability.

In terms of their body of work - both are hit and miss. Mariah's racked up hits, but few are memorable, whereas Whitney has quite a few "classics" in her catalogue. The only real classic mariah has produced is "Hero", though her albums are far better than Whitney's. I dont think she's ever made a decent album.

Its a tie for me.

That's crazy that she doesn't get them removed. Lionel Richie and Justin Timberlake both had nodules removed and it didn't hurt them. Love Julie Andrews ("Victor/Victoria" ). Mariah should really consider getting the surgery done because those nodules could affect more than just her singing voice...maybe that's why her speaking voice sounds soo harsh to me...like a 60 year chain smoker at times.

They both sounded amazing back in the day in very different ways. I love both of them...well, I love Whitney minus the crack pipe. I can't really compare them until Whitney releases a new album, so I'll get back to you on this one.

In hindsight, I was totally open for that Bodyguard soundtrack. There was nothing better than the dramatics of I Will Always Love You and my personal favorite I Have Nothing. Unfortunately, I'm permanently turned off from Whitney.

I think it's just a matter of which voice you prefer as they both had great voices. I tend to prefer the husky sultriness of Mariah's, especially her lower register. But don't ask Vainandy.

I remember when I helped induce my sister's labor when "I Will Always Love You" was popular. She was pregnant and overdue. We were riding in the car together and the song came on the radio. She said...."turn the station, I hate that damn song, it gets on my nerves"....I kept it on the same station and turned it up loud when Shitney hit that note...."And IIIII will always..... My sister started screaming....."turn that horrible shit off!!!!". Next thing you know, she was having labor pains and I drove her to the hospital.

I'd have to say back in the day Whitney. Mariah always hit those screeching high pitched notes simply because she could. Music wise I have never liked either, but at least Whitney's music never made me retch like Mariah has.
