Two reasons Nirvana were important

Sure they are both cover tunes, but the single question is, can someone make a song their own?

The thing I always like best about Nirvana was when Killing Joke sued them for ripping off their "Eighties" riff to use in "Come As You Are".....anyway Kurt Cobain being the gentleman he was denied stealing the riff and even said he'd never heard the song "Eighties" AND not only that but also that he'd never even heard of Killing Joke! SO.....Killing Joke pulled out a fan letter Kurt wrote them when he was about 13yrs old! BWAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!! Killing Joke dropped the suit when the idiot Cobain popped himself.

I've always thought Cobain popped himself because of the humiliation of the whole KJ episode and the big H had nothing to do with it.

Geordie Walker is an absolutely superb guitarist and kicked Cobains ass in every way shape and form so no surprise Cobain stole one of his riffs.....Cobain could've at least stole a riff from one of KJ's better songs though??!!

That is my all-time fav rock'n'roll story.

The best thing about them to me is they were BECK supporters.
and the feeling was mutual between them.

No.....the best (or second best thing for me) was that they were Melvins & Daniel Johnson supporters.

Beck is a Scientoligist nut.

Beck did have one of the coolest covers ever though.....

Took me ages to work out it was a crazy rasta looking dog jumping over something!

Well to tell the truth I always thought Nirvana (Like NIN) were over-hyped pish.

I'll stick to my Melvins & Killing Joke records thanks.

Ripped off/inspired or not, "Come As You Are" shits all over "Eighties". There's a reason that you'll ALWAYS see "Nevermind" in the Greatest albums ever list. I don't ever recall seeing a single Killing Joke album in any "Greatest Albums Ever" list. Not to undermine them, cos they are a great band and I do like a lot of their songs. But Nirvana are better.

Yeah and that Killing Joke song was just as obviously ripped from an even earlier one by the DAMNED!!!

I find it hard to believe that Cobain claimed to have never heard of Killing Joke, he was a record collectore dork like me and was totally into that English postpunk stuff so I wouldn't believe it if he did say it. But that song wasn't a worldwide smash hit either, I certainly don't remember hearing it before Nirvana's song although I did have some KJ stuff in my collection, mostly songs on compilations.

Dave Grohl is probably a better all around musician, but I can't think of a single song of his that really moves me. Maybe Everlong.

The Foo Fighters are really good, but their stuff is so safe in comparison. Nirvana always felt like it was on the edge of completely falling apart, and indeed it did, but it was fun while it lasted.

I don't doubt that Cobain could've stolen the riff, or even lied about it, but it's just as likely that two people could come up with such a simple riff independently.

That's what I was wondering?

I'll just name-check another kick ass Punk band that shits all over Nirvana and say KJ stole that riff from them. Well in that case bobzilla don't forget the Stiff Little Fingers song that Damned ripped off whcih was the one that KJ ripped off and in turn Kurdt ripped off.

KJ craps over Nirvana. Always have ALWAYS will. I mean I'm not the biggest KJ fan but I've heard all of their albums and seen them live numerous times, I've heard all of Nirvana's records and caught them a few times live and the conclusion I came to was that KJ slams them.

Greatest albums lists are a joke. they're compiled by crappy mags by people with crappy record collections. What they should be called is "All-Time Greatest Album List By People With Crappy Classic Rock Collections".....hence why you ALWAYS see "Nevermind" there and not Swans or Nick Cave records let alone any Funkadelic or the countless deadly Blues, Jazz, Funk, Soul, Reggae, Classical, Rock/Punk/Garage or Hip Hop records released.....I mean I'm not the biggest Hip Hop fan but has anyone here heard Aceyalone's album "A Book Of Human Language"???? That album is the greatest record ever created as far as I'm concerned.....will it be in a greatest record list.....NO.

Nirvana (although a good band but nothing special if you bother to delve into stacks of records) were a pishy panzy poppy version of the Melvins for kids/adults who were too pussy for Melvins records. King Buzzo taught Kurdt guitar then Dale Crover called up Dave and said he should hook up with Kurdt and co and PRESTO....Melvins had created a pop monster for the bewildered herd masses.

I enjoy a few Nirvana songs like the next guy....but please give us a break....they're another one of those over-hyped "greatest ever" bands who have a million other relatively unknown bands out there that KICK their ass!!!!

Forget Nirvana let's talk about Flipper! Great to see Krist nailing the Bass duties with Flipper the last few years.....caught them supporting Melvins a few times recently and they kicked ass.

As for Dave.....Foo Fighters have to be one of the crappiest most banal mediocre bands on the planet at the momment.

How can anyone "hate" Nirvana? Melvins gave birth to them. Any child of Melvins must be loved. Plus Krist is a kick ass guy.

I hate Foo Fighters. Even if Dave is also a kick ass guy.
