Would you say Sade is one of the greats?

For me, she is. She was and is so unique. There is truly no other artist like her and she created music her own way and in her own fashion. I don't think she gets enough props

She's a perennial favorite for me.

Although she doesn't have much material, Stronger Than Pride, Love Deluxe and Lovers Rock are enough to keep her near the top of my list. There's always at least one time per year when I need her music. Sometimes nothing else will do. She's a salve.

She once said that her inspirational artists are Nina Simone, Shirley Bassey, and Billie Holiday. Though she is underrated, she is one of the greatest out there and they don't make quality music anymore. She's beautiful and in a class by herself.

That is def true, there is no one else out there that sounds like her, music or voice. And I like it that she dont got to take her clothes off to sell records. Her talent is enough

I don't really care how my favorite artists are ranked in the musical pantheon,
but I do have to say that I think Sade is quite literally the most beautiful woman ever in the history of everything.

I'm right there with ya. nod

If I lived in the "Kiss Of Life" video, I would never have the desire or need to do anything else other than just spend all day in bed with her.

YES.

One of the greatest unique voices I've ever heard. I've loved her music since, basically, birth, LOL.

I've always admired her look also. She had/has an extremely beautiful face and style.

The term "great" gets thrown around a bit too easily.
I would agree that she was/is a unique Pop artist for her time.

Beyond the fact that each of the 6 albums she released made the Top 10 of The Billboard 200 chart, to me what is more impressive about her career than her voice and successful material, is how her image and personal life has been handled.

Do an internet search and 99.9999% (if not 100%) of what you'll find about Sade is her MUSIC!
You, more than likely, won't find any gossipy b.s. to snicker and speculate about.
No crotch shots while getting out of vehicles, crack binges, houses in foreclosure, messy relationship stories, drug arrests, revolving door trips to rehab, etc, etc, etc.

A quote from a 2001 Rolling Stone article:
In this culture where we worship everything young and fresh, Sade reminded us during last night's tour opener that there is no substitute for experience.

Another quote from a 2001 article in the New York Times that sums it up perfectly.:
In an era of unchecked self-expression and emotional outbursts, modesty and discretion made Sade a star.

A lesson that could/should be learned by many Pop personalities.
But then again, that would be too boring, wouldn't it? Not edgy or weird enough. disbelief

Yes, there are so many layers of greatness.
Sade's appearance and nubian beauty was and still is unique.

Well I have to dissent.
She's good, but voice has a limited range (I hear her cracking on the recordings) and her music gets tied down in a neo-bossa style. I would not label her as "great". I like her and consider her very beautiful. No; I don't list her among the great female singers in pop, jazz or rock. In "Quiet Storm"? Sure she's among the greats there.

Well said.

I don't even think that one would be able to find any paparazzi pics of Sade.

Practically every pic that comes up on a google search is a professional photo or screencap from one of her concert videos.

She's not a mediawhore like most in the business.

She doesn't have to try hard. One look at her and an earful of her music, and you're sold.

That’s pretty much the crux of our current society.

And what does that say about us when our intellects are so underdeveloped that the only thing left than can consistently stir us is gossip?

There's always been a battle raging in all of us between the superficial and the substantial.

The difference right now I believe is that superficiality is kicking ass. wink

ABSOLUTELY!

Besides the music, that's what I've always loved about Sade. I have never seen a bad picture of her, or any negative publicity. She seems to be in complete control of her image and life, yet at the same time, people still crave for her style of entertainment. I love that.

Since I always could tell there was something very cool/modest/quiet about her personality, as a little girl I could relate to that. Growing up, I would have appreciated seeing her spotlighted a little more on American magazines and television so I could learn more about her life, but I completely understand why she chose not to be subjugated to tabloid media and avoided overexposure and pressure. That's so very impressive to me now.

She's a class act for sure, a bit work-shy though. Maybe she's careful with her royalties, which can't be a bad thing. lot of respect here.
