Madonna's latest single 'Miles Away' has given the singer her lowest chart placing the in UK singles chart since 1984.

The song, taken from the star's recent 'Hard Candy' album, entered the UK singles chart at Number 39 on November 30, selling 5,643 copies, reports The Daily Telegraph.

The following week it slid to Number 68, before dropping out of the chart altogether last Sunday (December 14).

'Miles Away' is Madonna's lowest charting single since 1984's 'Borderline', which reached Number 56.

The singer's previous lowest entry was a re-issue of her 1989 song 'Oh Father', which reached Number 16 in 1996.

Since releasing her debut UK single 'Holiday' in 1983, Madonna has scored 13 Number One hits, the last of which was 'Hard Candy''s lead single, '4 Minutes'.

The Justin Timberlake-featuring song reached the top spot in March 2008

Love this song. Especially the breakdown at the end. Reminds me of my clubbing days.

she's had worse singles than this one.

why is it performing so badly? there's no video, right?
what about airplay?

she should start putting outtakes or leftovers on her
singles as bsides, that would boost her single sales.

nod

that's what prince should do too, and a lot of people
who sell less singles.

but is it even still about selling actual singles if u
want to enter the top 20?

i'm completely out of the loop as far as charts go lol

BUT THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA:

Rolling Stone Magazine: Tour of the Year

Rolling Stone Magazine named Madonna's Sticky & Sweet Tour as the tour of the year!

Madonna muscles her way to Number 1! Unlike the Federal Reserve Bank, Madonna presided over a fiscally phenomenal year, launching the highest grossing tour of 2008 - and the biggest tour ever by a solo artist. We're also pretty sure she could kick Fed Chief Ben Bernanke's ass in a fair fight.

i wonder if it has to do with it was the last single for WB and she had no interest in pushing it?

In Germany this is her most succesful era since True Blue. She had three top 11 hits, 4 Minutes being #1, GI2M #8 and MA #11. okay, it#s only the German charts...

Anyway, I loved Miles away from the very first low quality clip on youtube from that Japanese series... and will love it!

She did NO promotion, so only 6000 of her fans knew the single was out and actually bought it. i didn't buy the single, either, no b-sides, and I have the album anyway!

"Miles Away" missed the UK Top 20 because the nature of the chart is different. Back then every track debuted high and started falling so Madonna always had enough sales to scrap one week in the top 20 even with her biggest flops ("One More Chance", "Love Profusion"...) before freefalling out of the chart. Nowadays because of iTunes, tracks linger around forever. A 3rd single from a non-promoted album without a video cannot compete with red-hot artists and first singles that are not available on albums.

Recently Oasis, McFly and Boyzone saw their top 10 strings broken as well. Not to mention that "4 Minutes" spent 4 weeks at #1 which previously only happened with "Into The Groove" & "Vogue", so if you talk about end of an era, it's definitely not the Madonna era just yet...

The other day I was wondering about Hard Candy singles and remixes. Gone are the days when I could just walk into Tower Records and buy them. I used to have everything and now I know I'm missing so much.

Does anyone know how many official CD singles are available from HC?

All 3 singles have a 6-8 track US maxi-single, a UK/EU 2-track single and a 3-track UK/EU maxi. So a total of 9 formats, the only difference was that "Miles Away" only had the 2-track single and the picture disc, which also gave less sales...

This is exactly why Beat Goes On needed to be released. Kanye West is hot right now and the beat is totally old school Madonna.

agreed. it appears to be most people's favourite track off the album.
her last lowest charting single was in almost 20 bloody years ago in 1989. and it was number 16!? still a top 20 hit.this year she topped the charts with "4 Minutes"; and the most successful tour ever? i hardly think she's done. lol

It IS, but noone knows there's a new song out. Probably Warner didn't even bother to informate the DJs.

I didn't know this was her current single either until this thread announcing its apparent failure.

Awareness would be key!

She should have added a non-album track as a B-Side.

but look at what we are talking about, someone that has had a 24 year chart run, i mean do you seriously think ANYONE today will even come close to having a career of that level? that longevity, i can almost bet that no one will even come within half of that.

No, it's not going to happen, the nature of the chart is not gonna allow that. That's why it's unfair to say "Miles Away" is Madonna's biggest flop, because we're comparing 2 different eras.
