Nope then. Roseland was a show I went to for fanclub members only on the day Heathen was released, when he played that and Low all the way through.

Logic would indicate that playing an album front to back would be predictable. But it had the exact opposite effect. Knowing that record so well and having it as my all-time favorite made me anticipate what was coming next even more. Hearing stuff like "Always Crashing", "Be My Wife", "A New Career" and "Subterraneans" was one of the highlights of my life.

You have no idea how much the landscape of that album changed for me when it wasn't about a soccer star anymore The site has a lot of stuff. The best though are the quotes about each song and album directly from her, collected from interviews and whatnot. That way you're not cheating by reading the lyrics or whatever. It's directly from the creator's perspective.

Massive crush on Gail.
OK, I'll stay on topic. "Blue Jean," "Let's Dance," "China Girl," "Modern Love" and "Fame" kicked my tail when I was a kid. Especially "Blue Jean."

That's a great place to start, and all of those are 5 star records. You can't go wrong with anything he released in the 70's. It's all classic. Same with his 90's and 00's output. I truly enjoy all of those albums. If you don't have Heathen, that's a good intro to his more modern material.

Anxiety said: Brendan said: I think "Let's Dance" is new wave/pop brilliance. If it's looked down upon because of the album it appeared on or the two that followed, that's unfortunate. i love the 'let's dance' album...what little there is of it, anyway. it's so short! sometimes 'without you' feels too bubblegum when i'm not in the mood for it, but sometimes it just sounds like the ending of a really good 80s pop album. To me the first 3 tracks from this album set it off on a course of pop magnificence -- one of the great records of the decade. That it's ultimately only good, clean fun, I don't think should make it a total reject. Bowie penned some great songs in this period; even if the albums were a low watermark. But there's absolutely no way that Bowie was going to produce nothing but masterpieces for the rest of his career. No one has ever done that. And if someone thinks that's been done (everything is equally brilliant!), I'd argue that they have a soft spot for said artist. Even Bob Dylan and Duke Ellington had rough patches and will never recreate the magical decade that they ruled. They wouldn't be human if they could. And, besides, without the "good" and the "average" and the "what the hell?", one couldn't have the true appreciation for the "great" and the "masterwork". === My editor is over my knee === [Edited 12/12/08 19:36pm]
