RAY.
OF. LIGHT. And while I cannot stand Janet post VR, I think it's a great album but Ray of Light is better 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Velvet Rope hands down | |

Ray of Light by far. It's Madonna's greatest album to my ears. OTOH, Velvet Rope is too long and more than a little overrated IMO. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Even though I picked Ray Of Light, Velvet Rope the song is better than anything on it

I love them both, but Ray Of Light made a much bigger impact on me.

I love both. ROL wins for me, though. While TVR is Janet's last great album, and probably her most interesting, it's where a lot of the problems with her recent output started to creep in.

I agree with this completely. I lost interest in her after this album because of that exact issue. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

why did you pick ray of light it has the greater number of good songs. And I just love the sound and feel of the album. The electronic and acoustic instruments just complemented each other very well. She tried it with Music and American Life but they didnt work that way. Velvet Rope IS great too, her last great album but it's too long and has more filler than ROL

The Velvet Rope.
I fuckin' wrote about the album in my personal statement when I applied to the University of Southern California for god's sake.

Mara said: Same Here. That album really opened me up to become true to myself. I never heard an album that dealt with being truthful about your sexuality and to not be scared of it. It was trippy, it was fun, it was sensual and awakening. little long due to the slow jams however the album closed out with Special and that indeed made up for it. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I have to watch myself around that album though, it ain't tame.

wow the two albums are nothing alike to me but are both great in their own way
as a whole, I prefer VR and it's one of those albums that encouraged me to learn about myself and look at things. Ray of Light however has a lot of musical risks more than VR, and made me go "madonna would have never done a song sounding like that" quite a bit.

Both great CDs in their own rights...but Ray of Light...hands down.

As much as I like Velvet Rope, I tend to think that it's overrated by fans. It's overlong and bloated, not to mention it's where her interludes became tedious.
Ray of Light is damn near perfect, maybe not up to Like a Prayer standards, but pretty close. 'Drowned World (Substitute for Love)' is about as near to perfection as you can get. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

I have to watch myself around that album though, it ain't tame. Damn, Cinnie, I feel you with that. That album has emotional landmines all around it, right? Just triggers so much energy from the past. I haven't listened to it since 2006.

Its impetus revolved around themes of acceptance, discrimination and overcoming obstacles. In my freshman university English seminar we had to write an essay about a song or film and I wrote a paper on Meshell Ndegeocello's "May This Be Love" [1999]. My professor even brought in a portable stereo and played the song in class the last day.

That's another album, that, for me, if I play it ...emotions. It's hard to touch Bitter, man. I gotta like inch up on it if I'm gonna play it. Give me some Calvin Harris. lol [Edited 12/8/08 23:20pm]
