Dixie Chick singer Natalie Maines is being sued for defamation

because of her involvement in "West Memphis Three" cause celebre, the Associated Press reports.

The case centers on the conviction of three Arkansas teens for killing three eight-year-old boys in 1993. Supporters of the teens say suspicion fell on them because they were heavily into heavy metal music and the occult. All were sentenced to life in prison or death. But after a documentary raised questions about the case, a number of celebrities, including Johnny Depp, Eddie Vedder and Jack Black, have lent their names to their cause.

Maines went a step further; she repeated allegations made by teens' defense team that evidence linked one of the boys' stepfathers to the crime scene. Terry Hobbs filed suit seeking damages for loss of income, injury to his reputation and emotional distress.

Maines' statements, at a rally and in a letter posted on the band's website, were "so extreme in degree as to be beyond the pale of decency and to be regarded as atrocious and utterly intolerable in civilized society," according to the lawsuit.

Yes you can sue someone over comments that cause harm. Freedom of speech is not restricted. If you cause harm to someone with your comments, you are liable.

They would have a defense. We were just giving our client the best possible defense which we were obligated under the law to do. She doesn't have that defense. Even if you repeat something someone says, if you can't prove it is true, and it does harm, under the law you are liable.

I thought for sure this was going to be about Eric the Midget from the Howard Stern show. lol

He's pissed at her and keeps threating to sue her. I think she said when he got laid at the Bunny Ranch, the hookers there weren't in love with him and only did it for the money. What a surprise. lol He just can't believe it.
