The O'Jays - Ship Ahoy: Their MOST Emotional Song IMO!

The message needs no explanation, just listen to the lyrics...

And whats really amazing is, they released this song when they were @ the hight of their career despite the risk of losing ALL of their fame @ the time. Now THATS credibility.

Great tune!

They could almost do no wrong with such a strong follow up to Back Stabbers.
The "message" songs were surrounded by some very commercial tracks...

...You Got Your Hooks In Me as an example.

Most will remember For The Love Of Money as the big hit.

I'm shifting ALL of my focus on Philadelphia International Sound slowly but surely.

Sad to say, the ONLY consistent discography I have from them are Jean Carne's and the Jones Girls',,,the rest are measly compilations disbelief

U definitely have 2 check out the O'Jays catalog. They did some great albums with Philly Intl. Especially up until to Identify Yourself. The albums after that tend to get a little sketchy.

Also, the Teddy Pendergrass and Harold Melvin albums are excellent.

Yeah,I would recommend every Ojays album from 'Back Stabbers' (1972) to 'Identify Yourself' (1979).My favorite album is 1975's 'Family Reunion' which, amazingly,is the only Ojays CD that hasn't been remastered yet.

The albums after 'Identify Yourself' are indeed sketchy, mainly because those albums consist of old tracks that were previously rejected. There were alot of problems at Philadelphia International Records in the early 80s,Gamble and Huff were barely speaking to each other at that point.Things got so bad financially that the artists weren't even making "new" music anymore.Albums were compiled by using leftover,second-rate outtakes. That's why the Ojays early-80s albums leave alot to be desired (1982's 'My Favorite Person' wasn't so bad, though.)Many of the songs on those albums are nothing more than rejected filler tracks from previous albums.

I love Ship Ahoy music.
Another fav-O-rite from this LP beside the main staples, would be Don't Call Me Brother.

I dig the part where he come out the bar and see his tires been rip'd and see's the 'perpetrator' coming back up the street and says: "here you come, skin'n & grin'n".

..the "No good..no good..no good..son of a sea cook" line makes me laugh every time, you'd have to be pissed off to the highest degree of pisstivity to use that line.

My top O'Jays LP is 'Back Stabbers'.

'Identify Yourself' is a good album. It doesn't have as many standout tracks as the previous album ('So Full Of Love') but it's pretty good overall. There are four great songs here...

"Sing A Happy Song"---a catchy,disco-type number.Released as the first single.

"Hurry Up And Come Back"---a really soulful, dramatic R&B ballad.

"Forever Mine"---I'm sure you know this one.Released as the second single, this excellent slow jam did extremely well.

"I Want You Here With Me"---a nice, midtempo number that was released as the third single.

The remaining four songs are mediocre,so I'm gonna say that this album is half-great.It's worth it for the four songs I mentioned above.

I agree. It is probably the last great O'Jays album with Philly International. Though, I did like some tracks on My Favorite Person and Let Me Love You, but the albums don't compare to their previous work.

I don't think anyone has mentioned "Message In Our Music". It is a great album also.

MIOM has its moments for me, and I dig it,music A Prayer is nice, but I'd have to put the Survival LP ahead of MIOM.

I won't disagree with you on that. Survival is a great album. "What Am I Waiting For" gets me every time!!

As I listened to the song, it brought tears to my eyes. My father used to play it in the 70's, but as a little girl, I didn't understand the meaning of the song, of course. Thank you and my condolences goes out to Eddie LeVert for losing his two babies. He called them that when he won a award.

My favorite song on the 'Survival' album is the last song...."Never Break Us Up" music a smooth, almost jazz-like groove.
