I think this comment is a little overboard. Teena would wipe the crack whitney
ass across the floor. Now whitney was great vocally in her prime. My problem
with whitney was the boring ass pop adult contemporary shit she was doing. While she was doing that shit teena was singing and playing funk and doing some
great r&b ballads. I hope i don't get chopped up for this but teena was making
more pure r&b records than whitney was. Let's be honest. I mean teena has only had one crossover hit in her career and that was lover girl.
Yes shadow boxing is a great song and i had never heard it before the org.
I would put teena slightly behind chaka and aretha in their primes but i
would give her the nod over whitney's dull 80's shit. lol

YES

isn't it amusing that when a white girl gains a lot of success, it's because she's white and palatable to the mainstream masses, but when she doesn't, it's also because she's a white girl?

That is interesting. Cher, Madonna and Britney Spears are mega-stars, but Teena Marie wasn't/isn't. This is another case of Unsolved Mysteries, LOL.

I don't know....I personally think Teena's case is due to her voice and music sounding "too Black," which I love, but the majority non-Black masses apparently didn't/don't. It's a shame.

Although I like Chaka, Whitney, and Aretha, Teena OWNS her career. She writes, produces and playes various instruments. She IS the female Prince. She has loads more talent than Madonna too!

I always thought that too. Especially when she went to war with Motown to own her masters or something like that.

Her case change the laws... I think it is called the Teena Marie law.

Wikepedia:

The Brockert Initiative, popularly known as "The Teena Marie Law," which set a precedent for artists seeking control of their careers by limiting the length of recording contracts.

I forgot about this. Another reason why she is underrated.

Maybe it's just as well that she hasn't become a huge megastar. I like her just the way she is and love that she's never tried to cross over or waterdown her sound.

It was like role reversal. God gave all Shitney's blackness to Teena and gave all Teena's whiteness to Shitney. When I hear Teena, I wanna throwdown. When I hear Shitney, I start looking for a glass of milk to dip her in. lol

Long before Vanilla Ice or Eminem, which are shit hoppers and really shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath, there was Teena Marie. However, if you notice when it comes to Vanilla Ice or Eminem, two white artists that were supposedly "so black", they went after white mainstream audiences from the very beginning and got them. In their personal lives also, they dated mostly white women and were mostly white in every other sense of the word or than their music. When it came to Teena, which was years earlier and much more daring, she didn't give a damn if the white audience liked her or not. She went after the black audience and she loved mostly black men also.

Teena was the real deal, she wasn't fake like the others just trying to make major money off of black folks' music. It just depends on how you measure success. Most of the white audience loves a white person making black music as long as that white artist remains one of them. Teena was a white woman but she was too black, not only musically, but personally also, for most white audiences. She flaunted it, made no apologies for it, and if they didn't like her for it, they could kiss her ass. She was definately a bad lady and a huge influence on myself.

I don't think Lady T gets enough props and in my opinion, she is up there with them.

I 100% agree with you. But, here lies the questions. Is it due to the color of her skin? We all know that she has the chops so, is the reason that she is not up there with the others that you have mentioned, because she is white and that there are still some out there that believe that only blacks people should sing "Soul Music"?

I figured that I would start the people cussin' tonight, Timmy.

I asked this question awhile back because I felt that based on the breadth of her work, she was largely unappreciated amongst the masses. The masses, being black folks as her music has always been unapologetically directed to blacks. I most certainly place her above Whitney, on par with Chaka and the Aretha question is absurd.

I always thought of Teena Marie as a great musician/writer/producer but as a vocalist...average, much like Patrice Rushen.

Actually, I've always thought of her as being an outstanding vocalist with an average voice. She's always carried her work well from a vocal standpoint. Much like Prince, whom does not a great voice in the Luther, Sam, Otis tradition but rather is one of great vocalists of all time (IMO).

Hmmm...I remember when Nikka first came out and I read a review of her album and they said that she sounds like she could be Teena Marie's angry little sister! I thought, "I can hear that!"
