that is true but he rarely sang without auto tune. just saying....

FYI. Roger did not use autotune. Roger used a device that mixed his voice with a synth patch, which is similiar 2 a vocoder.

He used the same device Steven Tyler used on "Sweet Emotion" and Peter Frampton used on "Do You Feel Like I Do?", right? We used to call it a voice box. As I recall, it had a tube that you had to sing into.

That is correct. Rocktron makes one. I just purchased 1 a few months ago but I have not had a chance 2 fire it up yet.

Roger initially used the Electro-Harmonix

To avoid confusion among non-musicians who might read this, the "voice box" uses a tube and a "vocoder system" uses a microphone...

...Moog (circa '79)

As a point of interest, in 1962 country steel player Pete Drake used an early voice box on a tune called...

so at the end of the day your saying in general roger was more talented as he played many instruments which i'm sure is true but i still can't see why people diss kanye for using auto tune. well maybe when he feels more comfortable with his voice he'll go natural?

Please don't give him any ideas. lol

But yeah Roger was a real talented musician, he was a multi-instrumentalist.

I followed the link in the youtube clip and read the following:

Peter Frampton wasn't the first guitar player to put a plastic tube in his mouth to make his instrument talk. Pete Drake, a phenomenal steel guitar player, shows his stuff in the delightful video with an unusually moribund group of backup singers, musicians, and people who are sitting around in what appears to be a drug- or witchcraft-induced trance. When my wife saw this video she said, "This is where David Lynch got his ideas."

I knew the song but hadn't seen the clip, and that very thought entered my head after seeing it!

If you have to use the auto tune, then you don't have a "singing voice".

I should strive to be more than a smart ass. wink

Seriously, this song sounds like it would have potential in the studio (I haven't heard the album yet), but Kanye simply cannot sing.

Buy that I don't mean that he's not my cup of tea or that he's not a very good professional. He's simply atrocious as a singer by almost any human measure.

Live, without Auto-Tune and great production, he'd be what they'd show the first few weeks of American Idol.

But I don't doubt that he sounds great on the record and that I wouldn't be possibly blasting this song. That's not my argument.

Not everyone can do everything, or should even try. Perhaps Kanye will become great over time with the culmination of his studio wizardry. But this shit is painful.

People complain about it all the time, but the alternative is much worse. wink

The song sounds very intriguing to me.

I just need to hear it without the "picked a guy out of the audience" vocals.
