Just when I decided to, then I found out about the Cooke-Womack mess and that fucked me up big time "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. Yeah. @ bboy, yeah that whole thing with Bobby and the Cookes is still a hard thing to shake. Considering the Womacks are still connected to the Cookes to this day. | |

Anyway, if there's one song where he gives least Stevie a run for his money vocally, it's this song:

As if to illustrate my point, no one has posted a Donny song yet that isn't a cover. Allow me to be the first:

It's on his first CD, the one with "I Try". There is also the 1950's version by Nat King Cole. The song is older than you and I. Honestly i haven't heard enough of donny's music to put him in this
discussion. I know he was great vocally with his most popular songs. I still would rank him below marvin and stevie because of their body of work and donny unfortunately left us too soon. I have a discography of stevie cd's from 1962 to current. Stevie was just an amazing guy from 12 years on. He has some early jazz recordings that some may not know about and i'm telling that shit is amazing. I've been kind of busy lately so i can't name them individually right know. This cat was playing bongos, harmonicas, and horns doing these sessions. I've been so impressed by the jazz sessions and 1972's music of my mind i haven't even got to listening to innervisions, first fulfillingness finale, or talking book. Also marvin played drums for stevie on these early jazz sessions as well and stevie was marvin's favorite artist. No disrespect to donny but stevie is light years ahead of donnie. I'm sorry. Stevie may go down as the greatest of all time. I certainly wouldn't have a problem with that assertion. Don't laugh at my funk

Timmy84 said: No, because his career wasn't long enough to make that claim. He was one of the greatest no question about it and he was a true genius but in terms of overall appeal, he's just below Marvin and Stevie and that's not a bad thing either.
Marvin, Stevie & Donny are part of the Mt. Rushmore of soul geniuses to me. I agree ... FIRST TIER in no order by the way James Brown Ray Charles Sam Cooke Aretha Franklin Otis Redding Marvin Gaye Stevie Wonder SECOND TIER Jackie Wilson Etta James Ruth Brown Clyde McPhatter Sly Stone Smokey Robinson Curtis Mayfield THIRD TIER Bobby Womack Donny Hathaway Joe Tex George Clinton Mary Wells Something like that ...
