i'll be posting a lot to this thread, but THIS book came to mind first and foremost. i had a GREAT time reading this book, which is MOSTLY a bio of sylvester but is also a fantastic document of the surroundings and countercultures swirling around him throughout his days. i can't recommend this book enough.

This is my favorite Bowie bio, "Strange Fascination". It's lighter on the dishy gossip (though there's plenty) and heavier on his creative life.

Actually, "Hallo Spaceboy" by Dave Thompson is another favorite Bowie book, which is solely about the last two decades of his career.

Oh, and I can't forget "Bowie in Berlin" - which, if you like the "Low", "'Heroes'" and "Lodger" albums as much as I do, you'll be in hog heaven, cuz that's all this book is about - the making of those three albums. It's also a great book if you want to know more about Bowie's friendship with Iggy Pop.

I was just going to mention this... This along with his REM Bio are among my favorite books; total must reads. Also love "This Must Be The Place" about the Talking Heads and "U2 at the End of the World".

The Talking Heads bio is great. It really gets into the dynamic between David and Tina.

Three great Bowie picks. I also like Loving the Alien as a complement to them, because it does get into the dishier gossip aspects more than the others. I wouldn't recommend it on its own, but it gets at him from more of a mythology angle.

high fidelity

not bio or musician specific but very much involved with music/music obsession.
