Late 70's funk is not 'hard funk', in my opinion. I'd say hard funk is the real earthy funk made in the early seventies.
I guess it would be something like 'Get Up Everybody' by Starfire, or 'Jungle Boogie' by Kool & The Gang It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

There was a great program on Dutch tele yesterday about funk. The biggest funk fan in Holland named his top three James Brown (cuz he was the first), Sly Stone (cuz he was the best) and George Clinton (most colorful).
I always liked the Mastercuts Funk 1 & 2 albums and their P-Funk compilation. I 1. Who Is He (And What Is He to You)? - Withers, Bill 2. Wicky Wacky - Curtis, B. 3. Gimme Some More - Brown, James [1] 4. For the Love of Money - Gamble, Kenneth 5. Fire - Williams, James [Dr 6. Pusherman - Mayfield, Curtis 7. Blow Your Head - Brown, James [1] 8. Fencewalk - Mandrill 9. Pick Up the Pieces - Ball, Roger 10. Rock Creek Park - Hall, Joe [Piano] 11. N.T., Pts. 1 & 2 - Kool & the Gang 12. Stone to the Bone - Brown, James [1] II 01. Brass Construction - Movin' 02. The JB's - You Can Have Your Watergate 03. Kool & The Gang - Funky Stuff - More Funky Stu 04. The Ohio Players - Jive Turkey 05. The Detroit Emeralds - Baby Let Me Take You 06. The Blackbyrds - Do It Fluid 07. Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd St Rhythm Ban 08. Eddie Harris - It's Alright Now 09. The Fatback Band - Keep On Steppin' 10. Donny Hathaway - The Ghetto 11. James Brown - The Boss 12. The Crusaders - Stomp & Buck Dance P-Funk 1. Disco To Go - Brides Of Funkenstein 2. Dog Talk - K-9 Corporation 3. Four Play - Wesley, Fred & The Horny Horns 4. Funk Funk - Cameo (1) 5. Funken Town - Slave (1) 6. Get Lucky - Well Red 7. Hollywood - Red Hot Chili Peppers 8. Loopzilla - Clinton, George 9. Shake - General Caine 10. Tweakin' - Clinton, George 11. We Came To Funk Ya - Wesley, Fred & The Horny Horns 12. Work That Sucker To Death - Xavier

To me, hard funk would probably consider hard and fast drum beats, deep thumping bass, and brash lyrics. Sometimes a rocking guitar can add to this as well where it seems like more rock than funk. If you're confused about what I'm saying than let me give you some examples:
Hard beats funk: 1. Word Up-Cameo 2. Jungle Boogie-Kool & The Gang 3. Shake Your Rump To The Funk-Bar Kays 4. Thank You For Talkin' To Me Afica-Sly & The Family Stone 5. Chocolate City-Parliament Rocking hard funk: 1. Cosmic Slop-Funkadelic 2. Slide-Slave 3. Bambi-Prince 4. Talkin' Out The Side Of Your Neck-Cameo 5. Maggot Brain-Funkadelic Peace and be wild!

1. Cosmic Slop-Funkadelic 2. Slide-Slave 3. Bambi-Prince 4. Talkin' Out The Side Of Your Neck-Cameo 5. Maggot Brain-Funkadelic The hardest mix of funk and rock I can think of would be The Isley Brothers "Livin' In The Life/Go For Your Guns". Andy is a four letter word.

I might say that if you're looking for HARD FUNK that includes the heaviest RAW component, you'd have to look beyond groups (*with a few notable exceptions) that had major label album deals.
*(JB, Dyke & The Blazers, early Kool & The Gang, Meters, etc.) Here are few suggestions of relatively unknown artists whose recordings have almost no production values (an asset for the "RAW" element) but are what I might consider HARD FUNK. To save myself some time, these are comps that include a number of artists. I ran across this Keb Darge series... ...while hunting down a particular tune. The tune was Baby Don't Cry... ...by an obscure group called Third Guitar There's another series of FUNK comps (Jazzman)... ...based on regions of the U.S. Midwest Funk: Funk 45's from Tornado Alley Texas Funk: Black Gold from the Lone Star State 1968-1975 Florida Funk: 1968-1975 This particular CD includes tracks from 3 Florida groups (Bobby Williams, Westin Prim & Blacklash, The Montereys) I was aware of (actually played with 2 of them) when I lived there. This could be one starting point that will lead you to other unfamiliar "no-frills" FUNK bands. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. I don't mean I don't like 70's funk, it's just that I don't consider it 'hard funk' It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking bout! Funk in itself is already a 'hard' genre since funk is hard-soul. But what LoDog said qualifies as the hard in hard funk. I always thought Graham Central Station is pretty much as hard as funk can get.
