I agree w/all of that. Michael has such a nice tone to his voice and great control over it too. Jermaine is a very good singer too, but there's something about Mike's voice that stands out and makes me want to continue listening. Mike's voice is higher and when he spits out his lines, he's breathing at the end; kinda like gasping his lines. It makes them sound so emotional or sexy or filled with feeling. Jermaine is singing and singing well. Michael is gasphing and feeling and begging. It's a great performance from both of them. Some people tell me I've got great legs...

I seriously thought I'd be ripped up for this comment- I am glad so many agree. Michael didn't sabotage the single release. His record company did. By the way, Michael performed this every night on the Victory tour with Jermaine. http://www.youtube.com/wa...53oEQgdMP0 Here are some direct quotes from Bruce Sudano and Jermaine about it: ‘I co-wrote it with Michael Omartian and Jake Ruska,’ said Bruce Sudano. ‘We were working on Jermaine’s record. Michael Omartian was producing the album for Jermaine. Michael and I became friends when he produced Donna (Summer)’s album, SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY, and we had co-written a couple of songs for that album. Michael had a track that Jermaine liked, and if I wanted to write something, it would probably get on the record.’ ‘Jermaine took the song and played it for his brother, Michael Jackson, who also liked it and it became a duet. Jermaine released it as his first single, radio went nuts about the song, and then Jermaine’s record company got a call from Michael Jackson’s record company, with a "Sist and Desist" from playing the song. Michael’s BAD album was coming out and the company thought it would hinder Michael’s new release.’ Jermaine concurred: ‘A lack of communication between Clive Davis and CBS meant Arista were forbidden to issue the track as a single,’ explained Jermaine. ‘Basically, CBS were saying, why should we help you sell one of your albums?’ As it happened, Michael’s album BAD wasn’t actually released until 1987. That's unfortunate, because "Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin" would have been a Number One hit.Easily! It's even better than "State Of Shock".I really don't see why Michael's label (Epic/CBS) was trippin.A hit song would have benefitted everybody and,as it has been pointed out,Michael's 'Bad' album didn't come out until several years later, anyway. A solution to this problem: "Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin" should have been placed on the 'Victory' album (which is on Epic) and Jermaine's album (which is on Arista). Both labels would have benefitted. In 1979,Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand recorded a hit duet "Enough Is Enough",which appeared on both of their albums,on two different labels (Casablanca and Columbia). There was no conflict at all and everyone was happy.

I couldn't agree more. This track would have been awesome for the Victory album (my least fav Jacksons album). This would have been a massive hit. www.maximum-jackson.com

Yep. That's basically the reason why Michael wasn't on The Secret Garden and Al B Sure replaced him on the song Replace? Was more like an attempt to impersonate Michael's voice. LOL. This is all very confusing. I remember having this as a single and as a 12" extended single. I remember singing along to the instrumental version on the flip side.

But, that's not to say Jermaine doesn't sound good, coz he does. it definitely has an eerie vibe to it I agree. It shows that Michael's range, style, vibrato, ets. were better than Jermaine's. Just to confirm, I'm not saying Jermaine's vocals are "better" than Michael's. Who's are? I'm just stating that though Michael is ALWAYS on point, Jermaine gets my kudos for sounding great on this track.

In the live video I posted, Jermaine's voice seems a tad off key during the intro. He's stiff and concentrating on his bass playing. I think, during this song, Jermaine could have put the bass down and enjoyed singing the hit he had with his brother.
When Michael takes the stage for his intro... all eyes are on Michael. He's in his element as the front man for The Jacksons. |

Wow! This is rare footage! Yes, I saw this live in 1984 when the Victory Tour came to Dallas! I remember now they DID do this song because I liked it even then! Awesome.

Yes, Jermaine did come in off and didn't actually sing on key until a little bit later. I have much more respect for Jermaine, though, after watching this because he can really play an instrument which makes him more of a musician and not just a singer/entertainer. He was on that bass! Concentrating like you said, June 7. But when Michael came out! That's the Michael I love and remember!

Jermaine's bass playing and Tito's guitar playing should never be called into question. They've been baddass since they were kids! I think it's Tito who travels with some jazz trio... I think. Randy is supposedly kickass on the keys, too. |

Yeah, they're badass instrumentalists, though there's another Youtube-example where you have Randy singing the first lines of "Can You Feel it" at the beginning of a Triumph-Tour gig. Even more in that clip you can notice the big gap between Randy & Mike in vocal dynamics. Initially, Randy's mic doesn't work and he lends Mike's mic (lol), but then it's MJ's turn to start his part and it's like there's suddenly a tornado blowing through the mic, lol.
