A columnist's interesting take on the Grammy noms...

Alicia, Mariah, Madonna : Grammy Snubbed

Another year, and more weird Grammy nominations from left field. You can count on it as a definite right up there with death and taxes.

The big disaster: all but total snub of Alicia Keys’s album, “As I Am.” It should have been in Best Album, Song and Record. Instead, Keys was relegated to Best R&B album, R&B vocal performance by a female, and her duet with the ubiquitous darling of the awards, John Mayer. That the Grammys chose to snub Keys—maybe the leading performer/writer of her generation—speaks volumes.

Second big disaster: not a single nomination for Mariah Carey or anything from her “E=MC2” album. Not even a throwaway nod in R&B. Just an outright, across the board snub. What’s worse: they put Carey through the agony of participating in the Grammy live telecast last night and then giving her nothing!

Only two nominations, and minor ones, for Madonna for her Hard Candy album.

Strange nominations: tracks from Paul McCartney and Beyonce each came from unofficial albums, or side releases that are generally unavailable or unknown.

In fact, the McCartney nomination is for a live version of his song “That Was Me,” taken from a limited edition twelve inch vinyl release of four songs from his promotional performance at Amoeba Records in Hollywood.

What? Is this the bootleg Grammy show? McCartney released a very good album called Memory Almost Full including that song, that got nothing otherwise.

Or how about the Best Song nomination for a track by unknown singer Estelle and Kanye West? There are seven collaborators listed. The “song” also includes three samples. Best Dance Record maybe. But Best Song? I’m not convinced the judges on this panel knew what constituted a song. It’s very disappointing because they had many other better choices, and ignored them.

Of course, the big money is on Coldplay to just sweep everything and call it a day. Their album and title track, “Viva La Vida,” is the equivalent of U2 from a couple of years ago. And the value added of Coldplay wife Gwyneth Paltrow in the audience, being thanked by Chris Martin, etc. is incentive enough for the Grammy telecast.

Then there is the annual Kanye kerfuffle. He sampled a Daft Punk track called “Harder Better Stronger Faster” for his own track, called “Stronger” on his 2007 album, “Graduation.” That album was released in September 2007 and was eligible for last year’s Grammys. However: this year, the original Daft Punk track is nominated for Best Instrumental. According to amazon.com it was released on December 4, 2007 and was discontinued. It’s not available except maybe on a downloading service.

And there’s more. Beyonce is nominated for a track called “Me Myself I.” It wasn’t a single and it’s not from an album. It’s from the ITunes audio version of a DVD live concert called The Beyonce Experience. Again, are there are any rules anymore, or is this just a way to make sure Beyonce is on the show?

Of course, there may be more to the snubs than meet the eye. In the cases of Alicia Keys and Mariah Carey, it could be a punishment for appearing on the American Music Awards last month, and accepting awards from them. There has long been an unwritten rule that if an artist did anything with the AMAs, owned by Dick Clark Productions and considered a minor rival, the Grammys wouldn’t allow you on their show.

What happened on the AMA’s: Keys won two “favorite album” awards there, and performed the show ending blockbuster, her “Superwoman,” with Queen Latifah and opera diva Kathleen Battle.

Carey took home an honorary lifetime award and sang the hell out of “I Stay in Love.”

Next time they’ll know better. I guess.

Right. Never heard of most of the albums and singles nominated. Surprise Al Green didn't get more love ...I thought it was a great album. Was Solanges' album eligible? It should have gotten a R&B nod.

The only one of the females that i felt got snubbed was Alicia, though she is up for one, and will most likely win. Mariah didnt deserve anything, and Madonna usually isnt a friend to the grammy's. I would bet on Plant/Krauss taking home ALOT, especially album of the year, Coldplay may take Record,Eagles for pop album (though its not POP!)

Tell me about it. How sickening. My only hope for this is that Al Green walks away with a Grammy, otherwise, I couldn't care less. Most of it's a bunch of pop/hip/hop crap.

Al is up against Raphael. Raphael's album is (to me) better than Al's. Though, Al's is really good, also.

^^I'm wondering about that as well...confuse

Los Angeles (E! Online) – John Mayer has a reason to get a date (like he needs one). Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus have a shared reason to grouse. Jennifer Hudson has a reason to smile.

We've outlined the top Grammy nominations. Now we're going to sort through all the Grammy nominations—the noteworthy, the weird, and, yes, the snubs. Here goes:

• Mayer earned his annual ticket to the Grammy party with five nominations, including one for his non-euphemistic duet with Alicia Keys ("Lesson Learned," up for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals), and one for his artistic contribution to The Bucket List ("Say," up for best song written for a movie). • Swift cohosted the "nominations concert," watched ex-Joe Jonas and his brothers score a Best New Artist nod—and got nothing. Not a single nomination. (Her just-released album Fearless wasn't eligible, but some of her earlier released songs were.)

• Like fellow teen Swift, Cyrus didn't rate any nods for her Breakout hits. • One day after her estranged brother-in-law was charged with killing three members of her family, Hudson notched three nominations, including one for Best R&B Album for her self-titled debut. • Hudson's success helped make for a solid Grammys for American Idol. Fellow alums Jordin Sparks, Fantasia (who dueted with Hudson) and award-favorite Carrie Underwood also represented. Which is good for the show since the likes of Blake Lewis didn't.

• Tia Carrere—yes, that Tia Carrere—scored as many nominations as Mariah Carey, who can be thankful that the Best Gospel Performance category—she's up for a group sing-along—saved her from getting zip. (Carrere, the former Wayne's World vixen, is up for Best Hawaiian Music Album for her collaboration with Daniel Ho.) • Simon Cowell endorsement or no, Leona Lewis, up for three Grammys overall, failed to crack the Best New Artist field. • Where was Robin Thicke's name? Listed in the fine print of Lil Wayne's Album of the Year nomination. Thicke was one of the producers and mastering engineers. He received no other nominations. • At a combined 126 years old, Paul McCartney and James Taylor are this year's Tony Bennetts in the Male Pop Vocal category.

• At 50 years old, Madonna is still the Madonna of the Best Dance Recording category. She's also up for her collaboration, "4 Minutes," with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. • One last age thing: Mayer is the only under-40 nominee for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance. • Kylie Minogue and Cyndi Lauper are both up for Best 1980s Survivor Electronic/Dance Album.

• Wayne Brady did not forget the lyrics to "A Change Is Gonna Come," up for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.

This qualified as an album since she released the audio via iTunes. Also, it is on the DVD. I do like this arrangement, but it's not Grammy worthy.
