Vatican forgives John Lennon for Jesus remark

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican's newspaper has finally forgiven John Lennon for declaring that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, calling the remark a "boast" by a young man grappling with sudden fame.

The comment by Lennon to a London newspaper in 1966 infuriated Christians, particularly in the United States, some of whom burned Beatles' albums in huge pyres.

But time apparently heals all wounds.

"The remark by John Lennon, which triggered deep indignation mainly in the United States, after many years sounds only like a 'boast' by a young working-class Englishman faced with unexpected success, after growing up in the legend of Elvis and rock and roll," Vatican daily Osservatore Romano said.

The article, marking the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' "The White Album," went on to praise the pop band.

"The fact remains that 38 years after breaking up, the songs of the Lennon-McCartney brand have shown an extraordinary resistance to the passage of time, becoming a source of inspiration for more than one generation of pop musicians," it said.

Lennon was murdered in New York in 1980.

Wasn't his remark a comment on how kids of that time were more likely to get excited over the Beatles than they were the Bible? Not that the Beatles are better than Jesus, but that the focus was changing. As I recall, the original question was how the Beatles felt about parents not letting their kids listen to rock and roll or something.

There's a clip on Youtube or something I imagine.

Everything was taken out of context. This move is just another example of the church trying to misconstrue and capitalize.

Who the hell is the vatican to speak on anything? I mean they allowed rape and abuse of kids by its priests, and NEVER stopped it, in fact they buried the accusations despite the proof, the POPE actually was one of the people that told people in the church to hide the facts, an act that would land any person in jail, but since the pope has "god" in his corner, jail never came up.

Right now i hope that John Lennon would be saying "Fuck you, keep your apology, had i not said this FACT, someone like Madonna or Beyonce would have said it later"

Exactly. In my opinion, the vatican should go looking for the longest dildo and stick it up its ass. Lennon actually stated that they were just as popular as Jesus was when he was alive. A true statement for people with common sense. The fanatics just had a field day with it.

as i said and will always say ALL RELIGIONS warp thinking, especially common sense. If those fools and fanatics followed that fairy tale book "the bible" that they preach, they would realize that someone like Lennon was more about peace and love and not hating people, but of course they are too busy to actually read what they preach.

My biggest problem with Christian leaders is that they ignore what is "written" and try pulling the wool over people's eyes with obvious bullshit. Jews, Muslims, Hindus etc can't go to heaven because they don't accept Jesus as their lord and savior, but Christians pull up to church, pray to a practicing Jew (Jesus) and try to model their lives based on a book filled with nothing but Jewish stories (the bible). WTF? eek

It took them over 1500 years to apologize for calling Mary Magdalen a whore when the bible never once branded her as such. If one actually gives a flying fuck about the vatican's opinions then Lennon is lucky. It only took them 42 years to forgive him for his blasphemy.

Forgive him for what? He didn't say anything wrong. The only reason he gave that "apology" was because Brian Epstein made him. Wherever John Lennon is I'm sure he is saying a big "Fuck you!" to the Vatican church.

Try telling that to the nosy perverted priest who sits behind the "confession" window.
"Ooh you touched his what? You bad, bad girl." no no no!
"Say two hail Marys, drop $20 in the bin as you leave and you are forgiven."

They so to have the power to forgive sins.

See, this is my problem with organised religion...

What makes a "Catholic" these days is completely different to what made a Catholic say 50 years ago. All religions are like that - they're constantly evolving and changing. So who's to say what they will believe and consider "the truth" in another 50 years? But isn't that the point of religion? - to see about "universal law"? How can it be universal if even its supporters change their minds every couple of years?

So what it boils down to is that all you're supporting is the word "Catholoicism", which as pointed out above actually has no definitive stance on anything. (the same is for all organised religion IMO, I'm just using Catholicism as the example).

It's no different from supporting a sports team. The players/coaches/managers etc. change on a regular basis. Ater a couple of years you have a completely new team that bares no resemblence to the team you originally supported. But we keep supporting them because they're our "home team" or because we like the colour of their jersey lol. Who cares if the team you fell in love with is now a bunch of whining, steroid-uising jerk-offs? lol. That's OK for sports as it's all in good fun, but when it comes to finding the meaning of life, wouldn't you like to dedicate yourself to something a little more... consistent?

I truly believe that religion and idolatry has destroyed mankind, and we should be careful with the two because it gives a false sense of happiness. Many are focused on what it is than who it is.
